Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Apyl: Some of my fav authors lately have been ALL of John Lockes books-he has a wide variety of types as well....He is one of the top selling e books authors currently. And I would LOVE to see some of his made into movies. Just finished a good one this morning (Dont have my kindle with me) but beleive it was CJ Lyons perhaps?
As far as having time to read-I have an hour and 15 to an hour and a half commute each way to work. My SO drives-so it gives me plenty of reading time :)

Good morning Everyone! Had a post and it wouldn't submit? Now I'm mad! So just forget it! I'm pouting!

Oh Dear. * giggle * I know the feeling.

I love to read. Usually late at night when I should be sleeping. *rolleyes*

Greg Iles is a good author for exciting fiction imo. The libraries in Eau Claire won't allow The Shades of Gray book on the shelves. Hmm. I read a good book by Andrew Scott Card which had the name Christipher Columbus in it. Great Sci-Fi book. I also like Ken Follet for fiction. Homer's Odysey is about a blind cat's journey. Getting Lucky is a good book about a person who runs a rescue center for animals. Temple Grandin's Animals Make us Human is a wonderful book. The inner world of Farm animals is a wonderful book. Pigeons is an awesome book. lol George Orwell is a good author but dated.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai
Dog Years by Mark Doty
The Chicken Chronicles by Alice Walker
Year Zero by Jeff Long sci- fi

lol

I will have to check out John Locke.

good late morning, I would have been here earlier, but I read 6 pages of posts first..

have another TV chuck full of chicks.. had to set up a third tv.. after the fact, Annie tells me that she mixed my chicks with Brian's. Sh!t !! I don't even know what color his chicks were supposed to be..

FT, I always got $3.oo/each for guinea keets up to a week or two old.. then it goes up 50 cents per week after that..

TerriO, sounds like you did a good buy on that horse.. when we were kids, we didn't have ski boats.. we would hang on to the horses tail and have them drag us through the water.. the trick was to let go before the horse scrambled up the river bank.. otherwise you got kicked in the head..

all 3 of Sherry's turkeys died.. they were beat up pretty badly.. the one that hatched here is doing fine..

I left the potted plants in the planter/brooder/hot bed last night.. a 5 x 7 foot menard's tarp covered it perfectly.. totally unplanned stroke of luck..

OK, gotta go out and clean out a brooder pen for about 75 keets & chicks..

have to go pick up a couple of bags of starter crumbles today.. 200 chicks can really eat a lot !!

......jiminwisc..........

ANyone have any idea about the "itchy/scratchy" chicks? They are still trying to scratch their eyes out this morning...it almost seems like there is something in their ears? No idea.
Water in their ears??
hu.gif
Hope they quit that soon. Terri, are you bringing any Scovie babies to the Bash? BigFam was looking for some little ducks and Julie has some that just hatched last week that she'd bring, but if you're cornering the market........

Happy B-Day Halden!!!!!!!!! Not fair that babies have to grow.

Morning all!
Got the critters all care for and got my stew all stewing in the crock pot. I was at Woodmans yesterday and they had brisket on sale for $6.99. So I bought one stew. Not a normal brisket cooking method, but hey! I got a 3# brisket for less then 1# of "stew" type meat!
If it's gross I'll feed it to the dogs....LOL!

TO-Try giving those chicks a bath. If it is dried albumin you can get it off with regular Original Dawn dish soap. Then blow dry the babies. That is what I do if a have a chick that was wrapped in that stuff and it works great. The little ones love the hair dryer too. Take a paper towel and wide their faces with the soap and then again with clean water a few times. Their bodies are easier to wash but that is how I wash their sticky faces. I have used Dawn for years and never have had any issues or problems. I figured if the Nature People can was oil encrusted marine animals in Dawn then it'd work for the sticky mess on chicks. It does...very well....I get a bowl of luke warm water maybe a tinge warmer and add a few drops of Dawn and swish it around with my finger, wash the babies, then rinse them with clean water until there is no soap suds on the. Then blow dry until fluffy...Ben had to be Dawned and blow dried...

GR65-Mites will migrate once their food source is no longer available to them so since you have been dusting the birds on a regular basis, you have taken away the nites food source in the coop. That might be why your lone rooster has them. They will travel through the nooks and crannies of walls and windows to find food.
Also wild birds carry them so if you have a group of resident "house birds" then more then likely they have mites as well since your chickens have had them and they might be re-infesting eachother.
If the wild birds leave then the mites they have will travel to a new food source as well.

In some of the treatment options I've seen, some have stated to use bleach and some have said that bleach does not kill mites. Only a mitacide (sp) will and even then some of those don't work since they mites tend to build tolerances to "cides" since they have a short life span. You might want to contact your vet to see if they have a recommendation for an outdoor mitacide spray. You might have to move the chickens out if the coop to safely treat the wood and then let them back in after the recommended time period. Like when the product is completely dry.
I also have seen on other forums recently that people are using Frontline to kill the mites on the birds...they say it works great. Kills the mites deader then dead." A drop next to the vent (not in the vent!)" is what I have been seeing on those forums...I have never used Frontline on a chicken before....

Aply-I have a ton of authors for you....I'll send you a PM...

Well, gotta get going, I have errands to run and day light is a burnin'
Later!

Quote: Sharon shinn has some great books. Laurell K Hamilton or Charlene harris are good quick reads. I just checked out Discovery of Witches from teh library but have not read it yet. Dresden files series is good.
What are some series you liked? MLH would love that list too!

Say does anyone know or do wood carving signs? I want to put a wood sign on my coop but want it to be pretty. I have a bday coming up and DH is looking for an idea... that is it!

I got out and planted the sweet potatoes today. I found the first blossom on the peas too! I'm so excited! This is my first year growing peas and these are the peas I put out during the warm stretch back March!

Aside from that I'm exhausted. Hoping to get a nap today. The baby is snotty and didn't sleep well and my 3 year old has an ear ache from the water park this past weekend. Was a rough night.

Ok... I'm modifying my duck request. I think BL4 is getting it. I want a small duck. So she SHOULD have a call duck baby for me. I guess I can lve with one loud duck. I don't know though, are Cayugas loud? The little Cayuga mix I have sure does sqwak when I pick it up. Yous think I was killing it or something!
