Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Happy birthday Vicki

The final count on my hatch was: 2 white silkies, 2 light paint silkies, 1 dark paint silkie, 1 buff silkie. The buff died beCause its intestines we're outside of her belly. I have 1 blue and 1 white that at hatched Bash weekend. I wanted 4 different colors. I barely got it, but I did. I really hope these silkies are as sweet and gentle as I've read.

My final count is 16 Chicks. They are doing fairly well, lots of different colors from yellow to gopher striped to gray and then black. This hatch was in Grandpa's Stuff Incubator, hand turning 2-4 times a day. Maintained 45% humidity up until lock down then up to 75% for hatching. Had to help 5 with zipping because of thick membranes. I have 5 eggs left in the bator they have until Wednesday to decide if they will hatch or not (they are the biggest eggs).

Now the trick is to get the kids to realize that these babies will be sold...

Almost done with the "Summer Flu" had a major headache/fever/trots since Thursday. I almost didn't make it through church this AM but the church let me sit down to preach. They are such loving and kind people. It is going to be a busy week with events everyday, a wedding on Friday and Reception on Saturday with Father's day on Sunday... Too much to do and plan for...

It is also my anniversary today, 12 years to my smoking hot wife... My Grandparents celebrated their 64th the day before us. It is so much fun to see them so in love.

Have a great night,

KEN

Hi again...on my way in from outside there was this terrible shrieking cry from the barn area...really loud! Not like a cat or rabbit noise...not sure what is was. DH went out to look with the flashlight and didnt see anything except the neighbor's cat up in the loft. I wish that cat would go home to his own barn...makes me nervous with hens and chicks up there. THe white hen had her babies snuggled up under her at the top of the stairs. They looked so cute...she has 3 yellow and one black left. I dont know what happened to the two other yellow ones--I found them in the driveway just dead. She had a chipmunk one too...and maybe a few more yellows but I didnt find them.

The geese seem to be on round two. I saw some new babies tonight...about 10 I think. I had a lady stop by yesterday to buy a few little ones. In all the years she has been buying from me she has yet to get a male! She is hoping to sneak these goslings under her geese that have been sitting on unfertile eggs. I hope it works for her.

A very nice cool breeze is coming in the North window by my chair...feels like good sleeping weather again! It was just starting to sprinkle when I got in...too bad I didnt get more of those plants/seeds in the gardens!

I have the weirdest looking chick in the chick tv right now...I think I will get a pic and you can tell me what you think:

It stands like this all the time with it's wings out. Kinda reminds me of one of those little flies that you get under the waterers sometimes? The ones with the triangular wings? ANyhow, it is very small boned and feels light. The other one is a few days younger and has more bulk to it but not as many wing feathers yet. It seems like it is eating OK...man when I brought it out Little T attacked my hand! I gues he/she thinks they are its babies! Here is Little T....what say you? Boy or Girl?
I think I am leaning toward a roo at this point, looking at the comb.; but I have not had a roo with a "hairstyle" like this! I am hoping for a lady...Tina is nice but I want a real tame girl for Tommy!

Guess I am going off to bed...my popcorn snack is about done and the rain smells so good...it makes me want to sleep! (I am weird that way...) LOL--sweet dreams all and keep your fingers crossed for trapping success again tonight! (thanks)
Nighties! Terri O

Kristi, I'd guess it is a coon getting into your feeders, but the ear in that pic sure looks like it is from a cat. If the only thing it is after is your birdseed, I think killing it might be a bit excessive. I have a monster momma coon who used to bring her babies here all the time. They raided the bird feeders & hunted in my little "river", but they luckily never bothered my chickens.

Vicki, glad if I could help you with chicken math.

Now if only your DH will go along with it.

I have no experience in Wyandottes, so I cannot help you there. I am sorry your one with the vent gleet is not doing well. At least laying eggs on the floor isn't as bad as eating them. Hopefully it is just temporary. And "HAPPY BIRTHDAY"!!!!!!!!!

Ugh, Bl4, I do not envy your situation at all with the call eggs. Good luck with the hatch!

Glad you got your 4, Heather.

Ken, Happy Anniversary to you & your grandparents! Hope you're feeling better soon.

Awwww, that chick is just adorable, Terri. That is kinda odd how it holds it's wings. Cool feathering, though. Is Little T one of Tommy's kids? Wow, that was fast.

Well, it's much later than I thought & I still have much to do before bed, so sweet dreams, all!

Hi all!

Unk.... so cool about the poster! It would be great if she would "endorse" small farm, pasture freed eggs!

TO... hope you manage to get all your poultry killers!!! What odd little birds your hatching! I guess when their left to their own devices you can get some odd combos! Very cute though. Could it be that the little chick is 1/2 guinea? They will cross breed but the hatch rate is low. Maybe a genetic fluke? Other than that..... beats me!

vicki....Happy (late) Birthday! I was my youngest son's B-day too! Your hen may start laying in the boxes again, mine seem to go in streaks

the last few weeks the favorite spot seems to be on to of the brooder cage. As long as they lay where I can find them I don't care too much.

Ken... Happy Anniversary!

Congrats on all the little hatches!

Isis tried moving kittens again... she gave up when we kept putting them back and shut the door to where she wanted to go to! I'll change things up for her a little tomorrow and make the area bigger... maybe that will satisfy her.

Roadrunner got hurt again, not sure if it's the same leg but I have her in to rest. She laid a shell less almost yolk less egg last night. It just had a yellow pinhead size spot in it and that was it.

Jasmine took her kids to the "big roost" tonight! Had to go get the camera!

When I went down to close up all the chicks were crammed into 1 milk crate/nest box... all 14 of them! Wish I brought the camera down then!

so cute!

Well, guess that's it.... Night all!

good morning, I learned that peacocks wake up the chickens.. 4:3o AM .. Nora was busy at that time also.. I think it was a coon.. she kept barking and getting farther and farther away.. I guess she quit when she got to the woods.. then she came back and started barking again.. only this time it was shorter.. I suspect a deer..

with the large peacocks in the tree and on the garage, the owls don't seem to be getting at the guineas.. and with Nora on the ground, the coons and foxes are discouraged.. I haven't lost a bird for a long time..

we got screwed out of any rain yesterday.. I am glad that I can haul water with the tractor..
I am going to F&F to get another roll of weed cloth.. I might just as well do the Broccoli and Brussel sprouts.. If I have any cloth left over, I might just do the squash and cukes too..

I notice a few pieces of the cloth showing up all over the garden.. I guess we didn't pick it all up last fall..

Oh yeah, I still have to stake the tomatoes.. that should take all of 15 minutes..

Today, I just HAVE to clean out the one brooder pen.. I have a few turkeys that are way overdue to go outside.. I have a large metal electric brooder that I am thinking of tearing apart and using the guts to make a smaller brooder.. one that will fit inside the brooder pen.
I bought that large electric brooder at an auction in 1970 for $6.25.. I guess it doesn't owe me anything, eh? I imagine I will have to change all of the wiring.. the old stuff should be good and brittle..

OK, one cuppa down, one to go and then I am off on today's adventures..

Morning gang!!

All the critters are good, fed and watered every one. One of the Andie girls is a riot! Everytime I go into the coop she "goes after me" but from a distance. It's hilarious! I can't quite tell is she wants to start something or if she is begging for treats in her own weird way. She likes to try to get my boot laces so I'm thinking it's treat related. She is lucky she is a hen. If she was a rooster she'd be stew. She also likes to follow me around. Talks up a storm, but when I try to pick her up she takes off. Odd little thing...

Dan-cool poster! Thanks for the link. I've determined that the cherries have that canker you sent the link for and a google search revealed the the peaches have peach leaf curl. Can't do much until fall when the leaves drop to treat the peaches. I have to say that the apples are just fine!!! They are all happy and growing like weeds! I like those type of weeds!! LOL!!

Ken-Happy anniversary and I hope you feel better soon!

Vicki-Happy belated B-Day!!

TO-that little chick with her wings out---she might have "going light syndrome". Not much you can do. They eat like pig but don't grow and thrive. I've had a few chicks over the years with it. Eventually either they have died or I've had to send them to freezer camp...sorry to say....The other one looks like a roo to me too!! He or she is sure a cute thing though!

Cind-your Jasmine amazes me! Very cool pics!!!

BigFam-congrats on the new babies!

Well, I'd best get gone...

Good Morning All! Cind that is such a neat pic of the kids on the roost! Happy B'day Vic!!!!

Happy Anni Ken and good job on the hatchin! Think you need that new bator fired up.
hide.gif
Hope your feeling better soon! TO glad you got the perp. Babykins does the same thing with his wings. That's right I said his. Did the math yesterday and the count is 10 roo's out 15 eggs hatched.
rant.gif
But in their defense their handsome roo's. Took some pics yesterday but need some better ones to post. ChickenLover do you live in Richland Co by chance? Bf4me Congrats on your hatch! Bl4

on your duckies! How's FM doing? Tomski good hear from you! Dan cool poster! I hear ya on the heat. Finally dug out the pipe that has been hiding in the weeds for years scraped of the ground with the Fiord and laid tin down to pile the pipe on and was soakin wet by the time I finished. Was surprised as to how much there was. Got the crown molding all cut to fit for the b'room and started staining it. Yes Dan same b'room.

Ran out energy so L came out and we sprayed Peatwo up with Blue coat. OMG ILMFAO! He did not like the new coloration. He ran around the yard through the bushes, flowerbeds, coop trying to get away from that horrid color. He'd stop and look at it then take off running.

Took him about 20 minutes to accept the fact. Wasn't thinkin so good when I bought the crown molding, it's thick enough but it tapers back at the top. Now I have to paint the ceiling a little closer to the walls. So gonna finish the first coat of stain then paint the edges of the ceiling. Going to try and seperate the hens again. Went great yesterday so ya know how it's gonna be today. Have a good one!

Good morning! A bit chilly here today....NICE! That hot weather makes me feel not too good. I am glad that your "tame predators" are keeping the wild ones at bay Jim.That is the way to do it! Speaking of: nothing in the traps last night. I cant really believe that there was only one...although I must have seen 10 dead coons on the highway in my 15 mile drive to F&F yesterday! They must really be on the move.
The neighbor was telling me about one he watches every night at his bird feeder...maybe he will be missing it now?

I thought about that chick being a cross too...doesnt look like it (at least from the pics I have seen) but any thing is possible! I guess I will just have to wait and see. It is "going outside day" for the Bobwhite quail. I got their pen reinforced yesterday and all set up. I might add a wind block yet to the South.

Cind--was the Turk roo that I got from you related to Jasmine at all? Her chicks sure look like the bunches I have running around here! I just love it when they decide their kids are old enough to roost with the big birds! I have a pic somewhere that shows mine practicing in the day time. There must have been 15 lined up on the second lowest rung.
I have a feeling that it is going to be challenging this fall to get all the birds back into the chicken coops where they belong! I took stock yesterday of where they are all hanging out...there is NO WAY that I am feeding all these birds in their various cages all winter! In fact, if I dont start selling some pure eggs pretty soon they are all going to be turned loose together again!

Yes Little T is the only egg of Tommy and Tina's that hatched for the foolish hatch. SHe is still laying a fertile egg every day so I might make some more of these chicks if this one turns out to be another roo. So far it sur seems to have the laid back attitude of it's Dad! I only take it out about once a week or less but it is still tame after a few moments of being out. Must be that Cochin blood hey?

I suppose I'd better get out and get the rest of the masses fed...I let them out early when I checked the traps....I have to go clean a place at 9 and then to another client at 12:30. Then work around here and finish the veggie garden. I figure I can wait a bit on the flowers...but got to get the veggies growing!
Speaking of veggies...I just read an interesting article on GMO foods. I had some idea of them but the video that came along with the email was eye opening...then I saw it was produced by Greenpeace...nothing against them and they could be right. It sure sounded scarey the way they put it anyhow...I will see if I can post the link and you can check it out if you like.

I hope it shows up as a link...gotta run! Have a good one! Terri O

Morning Ken! glad to hear you have such a kind congregation and you are feeling better! However, I am confused! My calendar, and even my Google search states that Father's Day this year is on the 17th, not the 10th! Do you know when the Wave's swap is? Is it this weekend then or next????

Thank you everyone for the kind Birthday wishes!
