Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Quick question-its supossed to hit mid 90's all week. Has anyone lost chickens from this kind of heat? I felt so bad yesterday-the inside of the coop is slightly cooler and where they choose to hang out (cement wall barn). but wondering if there is anything else I can do for them besides plenty of water available?
90 to 100 is not that bad for chickens.. their body temp is that high naturally.. as long as they have some shade and plenty of water and moving air they should be OK..

I have gone so far as to just take ice and put it into a pan.. then they can drink the melted stuff (water) and be OK.. I never put any chickens or any other birds into shock by doing this..

Lately, as long as I am just hanging around anyway, I just change the water a couple of times a day.. I don't use the water jugs .. I am just using a few shallow pans.. easier to empty quickly and refill.. and it makes the geese happy when they can step into the pans and muddy up the water for everybody else..

HOT, in the north country,

Jim, I'm sure Annie counts the days to that wonderful anniversary "trip" each year!

got my second livestock related injury of the week this morning, when separating the roosters one of the pullets kickstarted my glasses off my mug, might end up with a shiner outta this one,,,
roll.png

the other day a doe rabbit laid some 10" long scratches across my forearm when moving her,,,,,,,,,,,,(make note moving critters is hazardous)

been giving electrolites in the water here all week, the birds aren't eating much but doing better than me in this heat

found 16 eggs hidden between some straw bales, hope re-stacking that pile gets her back to a nest box with the laying. I know there is one hen running out to behind the barn 1st thing every day,,,can't find that pile

might lower the mower deck and see if I can cut the grass short enough to burn out the lawn,,,,,one less chore for the summer (who said lawn should be green?)

I give up. This is my third try at posting. Obviously the sweltering heat and humidity is playing havock on Celcom service and my laptop and I'm tired of it sitting on my lap.

Time to take a nagged ride on the ATV through a sprinkler (that's turned on of course LOL) You all think I'm kidding. That ought to bring on some cool weather or rain hey? lol

Bl4 did you see your little duckies ? I have them housed right now with my pastels and a pair of snowies, just til we get more pens built. See what you started !!! I'm really enjoying my ducks and geese even more so then the chickens these days. I think watching them play in the water has a cooling effect.
My gander is doing summer salts under water and his feet stick up in the air and flap !!! Hilarious !!

But of course I have two bators full of eggs, Yes DH wants more laying hens !!! Ok whatever. Put 9 more paint silkie eggs in the bator yesterday. It was my Dads Birthday, he would have been 83 yr old. Happy Birthday in Heaven Daddy !!

Peacocks and Peahens are all over the yard. One Peacock roosts in a huge dead elm tree (that the horses girdled) every night. Calling out to the others. Wonder if I'll ever catch them ???

Called the DA's office today to see when the court date is for the horse. No charges as of yet. I talked to the stable owner yesterday and the Vet was out to see him. He said he was in pretty good shape for being so underfed. Teeth could use a tuneup but not the reason he is thin. Said he has a strong heartbeat and no sign of arthritis. He said he is in his 20's.
So not a real good sign if they want to press serious charges I'm thinking !!! Only thing that saved that horse was the fact that he had alot of shade trees where he was tied plus being fed grass clippings he did get some moisture from them. Not saying by any means it was ok, just sayin.
The woman at the DA's office said I should contact Sheriffs office if I wanted more info, they said to contact the DA's Geez.
One thing that tee's me off is that the Vet didn't get their until almost a week after they rescued him !!!!!
Anyway, better get outside and see if DH ok.

Oh and on a sad note, my neighbors lost a Stallion on Sunday. Just found him dead. He had bouts of Heaves in the past and the vet never did find out what was wrong. He was a paint Saddlebred/Arabian. Rest in Peace Gunner

And even sadder, my brother who lives in Racine County in the country had his dog hit by a car. I know he is devastated. His dogs were always very well trained but all it takes is one time. Guess he ran in the road and while running back home got hit and died instantly (Thank God for that anyway)
I feel so bad for my brother. He never goes out and buys a puppy or purebred. He always goes to the humane society and adopts an adult dog. They told him it was a boxer mix.
I took one look at him and well it was a pit mix. He was a very good dog. I think he's had him for about 2 years now.
No doubt if he would not have been adopted he would have been put down at the shelter. Racine has tons of pit mixes at the shelters. Up here they are full of hound bear dog mixes.
Only comforting thing is he had two good years. I don't know any more of the details but I do know they recently built houses across the street from him so something may have got his attention. ??????? All it takes is one time and it could be it. Rest in Peace Duke

We are here in Knoxville. The heat is horrible!

We got stuck on I-75 for 2 hours in 105 degree temps only traveling 3 miles just because people don't know how to merge

Today we went into downtown Knoxville to see the World's Fair Park, the Sun Sphere, The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, and play in the water fountain park. Registration tomorrow!

Oh that sounds yucky! I hope you have a much nicer time here on out!

Yes Frenchie I saw my babies, they look like they fit right in with their fellow webfooters.

My cousin asked me to move into their neighborhood again.... there is NO WAY I could possibly tolerate living with a neighborhood association telling me what I can and cannot do with my property! Plus, where would I keep my ducks????

Margarita time I think...

Summertime Here Today...hard to believe that C-Ville received 1.5 inches of rain today and we stayed dry...clouds and thunder as it headed toward Clintonville....what the heck!

We have been eating the watermellon like crazy here too. Bought 3 at the store Sunday...down to half that already.

Forgot to say Frenchie...no real house chickens, just visitors on a daily basis...hope your brother finds a new friend soon.

Sounds like smokin hot tomorrow....the brats and beer tasted good tonight...gotta love the ho-made relish.

Chickenscratch- looks like a blast!!! Traffic is always fun... NOT!

FT- I'm jealous, wish I had some peafowl!

So tonight, after seeing them try and try to get into my brooders, I have decided that I am going to start trapping the coons. Have three live traps set and baited with wet dog food. Already managed to trap my rescue kitty xD Wish me luck!
