Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Jungs....hate this spell corrector on the iPad

Anyone coming to or around Madison have a couple fertile eggs to toss under my broody. The only one I know for certain tds my roo visits is the two silkies, so not a ton of eggs to push under broody miss eggie. Not the time of yer I wanted to put eggs under her, but she has gotten a dip in th kids old pool every day this week and tossed out and she keeps going back. Sigh.

On a plus side dh saw a nice little plastic shed kit that was 4 x6 or 4x8 that has a film window and vents in it, he thought would be easy to attach to our coop and might be a better winter home for silkies and others.

garlic is planted in early Oct and harvested in July in WI getting to be very trendy to grow it, I think with more ppl planting gardens and wanting to grow their own the demand is up and the 3 vendors I talk to all agree that the $ in growing for resale is in the large heads for seed stock

inventories are selling out fast so like I said a while back if you plan to grow it get some ordered

BF4~I have been planting German Porcelin (spelling?) for over 15 years now and it is the best producer, with the largest bulbs I have found for my soil and location. This year the crazy heat kind of got it but I still had 100% germination just some not as big as they should have been. My biggest problem with garlic up here is timing the planting. It's nearly impossible to second guess when the ground will freeze. Under guess and it's coming up thru the mulch, too late and it doesn't get a chance to root before the ground goes solid. So far I have been lucky that when I was wrong, I was early and you can correct by adjusting the mulch. No one wanted my extra garlic last year so I didn't plant that much last fall. I threw away almost a 100 bulbs by end of winter. (intended to turn it into powder but just didn't get to it in time). Wouldn't you know it? Had I met all of you sooner I could have given you lots! Shorting my personal use this time so I can plant this fall to share next year.

I LOVE the rocks and corn cobs

I am exhausted! It has been years since I built my meatball lasagna from scratch and forgot how many steps there was to it! Running out to the garden for basil and onions just added to the whole thing. BUT, the house sure smells good!!!

Yesterday my kids were playing with a young gray squirrel in our yard. They would hold a stivk oit touching the ground and the squirrel would climb up to their hand..Today the dog got ahold of a squirrel and my daughter swears its the same one. So, its in my garage. I thought its back was broke, but it can still move its legs a little. So I'll give the poor guy a chance. Originally I put it in the garage to wait till my husband got home to shoot it.

Hi, everyone.
Not much new to report so I've just been lurking. Re: garlic, I grow 5 or 6 different types. Will have to go look the names up when I'm in the basement. I really like the ones I have as the cloves are large and they peel really easily. I got real tired of the heads of garlic that had tons of teeny-weeny cloves to peel! I grew Elephant garlic one year (or two, I forget) and just stopped growing it. Granted it is large in size but has little garlic flavor in my opinion. I think I read somewhere that it's actually from the leek family or tastes like leeks (which is how I remember it.) Another good place to find seed garlic is at Farmer's Markets. Buy the biggest heads you can and make sure the cloves aren't withered or sprouting... I plant mine towards the end of October but have gone into November as the weather dictates. I wait until things are really starting to cool down before I plant them...

I'm still waiting for a lot of my veggies to ripen - so I've been going to a local U Pick Farm - canning tomatoes are $.55 lb., eggplants $.40 each, etc., etc! My kind of place!

Hey, TO, I'm trying your pie crust recipe for the first time today! (I rendered my own lard, seriously! One more thing to cross off the old bucket list.) I'd like to know if I can make the pie crust and then just freeze it after I split it in two? My sister gave me the lard to render from the pig they had butchered, so I'd like to make her up some pie crusts without spreading the dough out, forming in pie pans, as I don't have any to spare. I'm wondering if it freezes well, any idea?

Well, that's all for now! Must get back to peeling and coring these tiny little pie apples that I bought for $.50 lb. Cheap but lots of work!
Have a good one! (You guys are really great entertainment! Thanks for the daily laughs!)
Elaine
