Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yes, you can eat fertilized eggs. The eggs have to be under a momma or incubator at the consistently high temp for the "chicken fixens" to actually develop into something. I have gotten older eggs from sellers before. I think I got a chick to hatch from a 3 week old egg (3 wks old before I popped it into the Bator). I think that's pretty old though. A couple weeks though should still be fine. Right Jim... Oh Chicken Knowledge Fairy???

Yes... The silkie is a bantam. However a cockerel is not really going to be bothered by the size difference ( go figure! ). My big chickens don't mind them at all. The pullet/hen bantams are kind of an issue I hear, because of a full size rooster trying to mount them can do lots of damage. But I have read funny stories of a little silkie roo giving it his all to mount a full size hen. It has to be hilarious to see. When you see ths little fluff ball you'll know what I'm talking about. Oh and I have also read that the little bantam Roo WAS able to make fertilized eggs! Just saying... You may be could have chicks... May be...;)

We had a silkie roo...ours was just not kid friendly. Most are! The nice thing about a roo is that he keeps the peace of the hens. My new roo is young so he is not sure what to do with all these crazy hens.

I was told for best fertility, under a week, non refrigerated eggs are best. But I am to an expert. Thy taste the same, fertilizer or not!

Good evening! MXM--you are too funny--yes you have eaten fertilized eggs if you have eaten mine. If you think about it...before a hen starts sitting she will lay 12 to 15 eggs so the first egg laid will already be two weeks old but will still hatch just as well as the one that has only been in the nest for a day! AND they hatch within a few days of each other too! What you need to do if you have roosters is to make sure you collect ALL eggs at least once a day. If there is one that stays in the nest it has a chance of beginning to develop just with the various hens sitting to lay. I think I read somewhere that it is about 3 days until the embryo gets to the point where it is noticeable in the egg. HTH! I can just see Cloe with a pet chicken...you too will have a house chicken!

Just finished with dinner....MMMM! Mashed potatoes, chicken legs, beets and cauliflower. Very yummy and I ate too much!
Dogs are barking...guess I better get them out ans put them to bed. Nighties all and sweet dreams too! TerriOwithadistendedtummy

Terri, just checking in with a potato taste test report:

I roasted some Yellow Finns, All Blue, Purple Viking, and the mystery red, with some salt, pepper, and onion powder. The Finns had a nice smooth texture and rich taste for a spud. The Blues I've had before and are a bit earthy, and the skins tend to crisp up. The Vikings seemed a bit grainy in texture, and tasted like a regular red potato. I'll do the Yukon Gold and Kennebec another day.

I'd like to save some for seed next year, not quite sure how to keep them though. In the basement is the only place I've got.

Hi all,

Another super long hard day/ night of trying to get stuff done. Made 7 jars of tinctures (like an herb extract) for something I'm making. With luck I'll have some for the S.Bash as my white elephant. All in all it will be a busy week!
Too late and too tired to say much so .... Night all!

Good Morning Everyone! Read everything yesterday and it seems the pillow absorbed it.

city girl. Amy thanks for being the taste tester! Am thinking of trying some kennebec's next year. I know a couple of people that did yukon golds and just raved over them. They gave us some and I wasn't all that impressed.

Don't remember who said they were making meatloaf but I was planning that too and had a thought of posting before someone else said it. Guess there are enough people on here that we're bound to be making the same thing. So here goes pork chops and fresh garden salad tonight.

Good morning good chicken people! Dr H as I was refreshing my screen your little happy guy was going in slow motion! LOL--that's how I feel this morning. Slept right through my alarm even though I have plans to go riding....musta been the nice warm bed covers and the window open letting that chilly air blow in! The dogs are curled up in circles with their feet tucked in...yup, sure wish we had our chimney fixed...looks like another winter with the oil heat. Not that I plan on turning it on any time soon....
You be careful out there playing with that tractor and saw DrH! We worry ya know (to use your phrase) about you old guys overdoing it! Just remember last year when you were down for a few days after starting the wood harvest!

Carol...I am going to call you on my way out...we are riding Donald park today and I think that is kinda close to you? Commander is STILL lame a bit so I am taking Brodie. I have called the vet and will update you all after he comes out. I sure hope it's not ringbone--that is what it seems like to me...$$$ to get him to be kinda sound.

Well, dogs are ready to go out...later all. Enjoy this great fall day!

Anyway, We got a little rain here yesterday. It was rather nice outside with the rain clouds coming and going. Then the sun came out late in the afternoon and it was spectacular! This morning is clear bright and chilly!! LOVE IT!!! The heater in the house actually went on for the first time! Now I have to add winterizing the house to my chore list.

What else...Bubba has been an absolute Punk the last few days. He is just trouble on a way to a happening. I can't wait till he gets out of his abnoxious (sp) teen stage. I was cleaning their box yesterday and he jumped on my back. He's done this before and he usually jumps right off. Well, yesterday he didn't and started to loose his balance and scratched my back up good. I got him off and boy did I have some choice words to say to him! He ran like the Devil Herself was chasing him and then spent the day dejected. I did not care.....DH but some AB ointment on my back and we're keeping tabs on the scratched. Stooopid cat.....ARGH!!

GRRRRR......
As far as Perfect Angel Cat goes Ichabod he just looked at Bubba as if to say "Nice going jerkwad....now we'll never get treats!"

Well, DH is roaming the house so we'd best get going....He is speaking at BL4's seminar tonight!!
Later Gators....

Thanks everybody who offered up their "bators." My school is going to let me build one with the students as a project so I won't be needing to borrow anyone's. I do appreciate the support. Wish me luck with my first hatch attempt!

Thanks again,

Anyone want to come help me do 18 loads of laundry? That is how much laundry I have to do if I wanted to get all boys clothes and my own done before we leave for California Sat morning. I also want to pack EARLY! I am a procrastinator and usually leave it Until the night before or day of! But I have to figure out how to pack for 6 people for 5 days, in as few of suitcases as possible. I could just bring 6 flipping suitcases, one for each of us. Imagine THAT train going through the airport! But I have to bring the stroller, a car seat for Halden, and a booster seat or Harrison since we'll be driving in CA and they need to be safe. That is so much stuff! AAARRRGGG!

I also have been sharing germs with my children. I'm fighting a cold and was down yesterday for most of the day. I was so exhausted I just kept ending up in bed and couldn't do much. I feel a bit more like myself today, so will hopefully be able to get some stuff d
one before I pick the kids up from school and head to Madison for gymnastics.

I forget... What happened to Frenchie? Did she go on her natural remedy walk, get her peg leg stuck in a hole, and is now just hopping aimlessly, probably naked, through the woods somewhere? Poor poor Sandi.....
