Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning! JJ I bet Jim could help you with that problem of the turner...of course he will want you to take it all apart and make this piece and then that piece and put it all back together and WHA LA! It will work fine...and you can be the Southern Hatchmaster! LOL! I hope you get it working...
Chilly here (duh) sitting in my jammies and a winter coat. I am thinking about calling in sick to my work today...really just dont feel like going. I felt so crappy yesterday with the joint thing and didnt get much done...I probably will go though cause I wont want to make it up this week at all. But that means I have to get off this computer and get dressed and go out and get everyone fed and watered before I go. Man, I bet I could talk my self out of anything today....

Glad you are getting stuff sat for the winter Cind! That has to be pretty tough to do by yourself.

Well, that was a nice diversion...a guy actually stopped for eggs! We had a chat about how keeping chickens is so expensive...he has some but they arent laying well. He must be at the Riverbend Campground...wanting breakfast.

So as I was saying Cind...if your fam wants to use the hot tub perhaps THEY should clean it out? Yeah, I know how you probably feel about that--kinda like my fam cleaning out the back room so they can use it...I will say it is looking better for sure. They want another place to watch TV when DH is hogging the one in the living room. I thought about suggesting they move out....

Guess I better get moving or none will be fed at all and it will be lunch time. Doc I sure wish I had your "go get 'em" attitude right in the morning...I used to, wonder what happened to it? [you stole it didnt you?]
Have a great day everyone! TerriOthinkingaboutgettingmoretropicalfish

Morning all!
I've been busy here and missed a few days! To many posts to catch up on!
DH and I have been getting the yard cleaned up and the last of the garden plants all torn out and tossed, and getting things put away for the winter . You know all that stuff you do in the fall!
Next on the list is to seal the windows. Hoping to get that done today or tomorrow.
The critters are all well and enjoying the colder weather.

Well, just wanted to stop in for a quick

!
Later!

Good AM, right on TerriO.. If you have to fix something, why not make it better ?

those bators are easy to work on.. and Yes, you have to take the back off.. Not a big deal, just a bunch of screws holding that piece of plywood in place.. some of the units have a sticky gasket, so you might have to pry a little to get the plywood off..

Once it is open, all the linkage is right there in plain view..

You do know about the 3 positions on the switch, I presume ?? Up = hold by hand and the turner turns, center = nothing is going to happen.. down = automatic timer activated...

kim, there is nothing wrong with butchering young roosters.. true, there is not as much meat on them, but it is usually more tender.. then you can make fried chicken...........

...jimcouldfixtheturnerifitwerehere...............

I was just walking out the door to go to town.. the phone rang.. it was a guy looking for roosters.. I told him if he came today, I would knock $1 off each one.. he said he would be here in an hour..

Hey all taking a break, too darn much to get done without a break, but all the windows are washed inside and out...... geez I have way too many big windows...... I should also wash this Puter screen yuck dirty, and its all you guys fault too, if ya all wouldn't make me laugh so dam hard, it wouldn't be full of coffee or food.......... well the flies in here too a few have bit the dust on the screen.....

Yup I know exactly what you are saying MLHens...... that's what we did all weekend, and we ain't done yet I still have to put away the big mower, the wire fence from around the garden, all the stakes, and the tiller, all the garden hoes rakes and crap, and close up the garden shed.......... then I have to cover that air conditioner b4 we freeze in here......... and plastic our inside windows on the north side. TG there is only 3. but I also do the west ones in our bedrooms, the wind is always either from the west or Northwest, here this time of year till May..........then it goes to SW or South.

Thanks Jim .I think I will bring them all then instead of messing around when its cold enough for running blood to freeze on........... I am never hatching June Chicks again, February thru, April......and I'm done. This late season stuff ain't for me, and Feb. is a little early, but well they stay in here a month then they can go out in the big brooder, that closes up pretty tight and I have a sweeter heater for in it, keeps it plenty warm, unless of course if we get that 50 below stuff in Feb........... haven't had that since 93/94 winter, with the wind chill was 80 below out there........ no ones car would start unless it sat in a garage, and my heater was not working right in our rental, and landlord would not come fix it, it was so cold in my house the dogs water bowl was frozen solid on my kitchen floor...........

Man is it windy out there today I almost got blown off the porch washing the patio window....... eekkkkksssssss must be gusting 40 45....... glad it isn't 30 degrees......... just feels that way with the wind.
so better get back too work, I have to make supper here soon too, making Hamburger soup....... yummy.......:drool

the guy took 7 roosters.. If this keeps up we will have to butcher pullets..

the pullet flock is beginning to look quite sparse also.. most of both white type chickens are gone.. I have about a half dozen white rock/delaware cross left.. pretty heavy on the barred rocks yet..

I can hardly keep my eyes open.. I have to take the garbage down, remove the window AC and make supper.. I think I will take a nap first..

DD#2 was here for a couple of hours.. we sat and talked for a long time.. that was a pleasant time well spent...

Evening all,

Hope all is well. I have a few questions for you. I know you are the experts.

1. has anyone every ordered chicks in late March?
2. Which Banty is the best for friendliness and cold hardiness
3. Anyone use ideal or my pet chicken ( yeah I know they are expensive but they use heat packs) or do you know of an instate hatchery. I know of purely Poultry but they are a middle man just like my pet chicken.

Anyone hear of Utgaard's Hatchery in Sun Prairie?

thanks for putting up with me.

David

Hi folks

what's with the wind? keeps adding things to my lists,,,,,grrrrrr

David I plan to order some chicks in March,,,,just need a place to brood them until they are full feathered

Sunnyside and Abendroth's are 2 that I have used in WI and there is another in Bancroft that gets mentioned here

not sure but I think Idea and My Pet Chicken are connected,,,,my bet would be you can find chicks this spring locally unless you have your heart set on certain breeds. I will be hatching (insert wink here) starting in Feb. BCMarans, Wheaton/Blue Wheaton Ameraucanas for sure,,,who knows what else. I'm just an hour north of you.

anyone ever use feed from Hubbard? saw it mentioned on another thread, found a mill that sells it and will mix and grind anything I request, even in smaller quantities, it's about 80 miles away but I live in bfEgyp

comfort food night, hoemade mac and cheese, and for late night snacking pleasure brownies

Utgaards used to be in Star Prairie, but closed down. Is there one in Sun Prairie? I like my faverolles and cochins for cold hardiness and friendliness. And I have used Hubbard feed. I like it, but I have to drive a ways to get it. The place I buy it from also carries Kent multiflock and I usually buy that instead if I drive that far.

Ok, so my son has been wondering . . . in a battle who would win : Darth Vader or Voldemort

David...we have done MPc with a group of others in late march with success. As for Bantys... We have a number that are wonderful. Cheryl on here breeds bantam brown leghorns that are really friendly. My bantam Cochin does fine in winter. We are trying duccles this winter, but they are sweet birds. Carol and is ill be breeding those in spring.

Afraid that at four weeks of age, we have to bring our babies in...momma has decided not to spend as much time with the chicks, she was busy scratching and not sitting with them as much today. One was shivering pretty good... I am a worried momma now, so they are moving to my garage with a heat lamp.

Just tring to figure out the best way to attach a perch to the inside of the plastic shed that is now attached to the coop
