Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good early afternoon, I have been busy all morning until now.. finally got gramma into her favorite chair and I am free for awhile..

I am dealing on getting a male Maremma from Kansas.. He is 12 weeks old.. Kim, he has the wide head like bear.. anybody going that way (Ka) soon ?

The neighbor is picking Ollie up this afternoon.. not going to work on it right away, though.. I don't care.. It is his problem now.. might have to polish the crank again if the bearings smeared..

I never tried planting sweet potatoes.. we always used buttercup squash as sweet potatoes..
Next year we are going to move the garden up closer to the house.. (within water hose distance)

Annie dug the rest of the potatoes this AM.. we got a good yield from the Kennebecs and Russets.. I planted only one kind of tomato.. Early Girls.. Had real good luck with them also..'
the pepper plants were small, but the yield was the best we ever had..
had a few meals with the Bruss Sprouts,, still a few plants left, I think.. I think there is still Broccoli, too..

the raised planter did not produce much.. the radishes bolted without forming bulbs,, and the carrots are still veeryy tiny.. keeping the soil moist was a challenge.. It gets dried out from the bottom and the top.. Oh well, the thing will make a nice chick brooder..

Thanks Bigfam and TerriO- wasn't sre if anyone was familiar with Sulmet for laying hens. We use it for the calves when they have the scours. Just checking if there was something more "organic" so to say. He said he wasn't sure what it was except it wasn't worms and MAYBE could be cocci. I looked it up though and it is definitely NOT something I want to mess with!

Happy rainy afternoon...man did it pour here while I was out with the birds this morning. I am glad I followed my hunch and picked the potatoes up from the ground first. (I am slowly learning to listen to that little voice...) I didnt when I sat the scoop full of eggs on the edge of the bin though...6 broken!

So my client was good today...not so crabby as he has been. Got everything finished up there in 2 hours. THe road on the way there was closed--I drove on it anyhow. I dont get why they have to "fix" all the town roads when there is nothing wrong with them! Guess you have to spend the $$ if you've got it. Tax dollars at work...

I guess there was a big house fire around the corner from me. DH called from work and asked if I knew what house it was...no, I'm at work too...he wants to drop a card off to see if the company can do the estimating/fixing work.

Dan I was planning on doing them with slips. I was reading how to make them in my book...if I dont get them going then maybe I can hook up with some from your friend. The book says that the farmers sell them at the markets near spring time but I havent ever seen them around here.
Yeah Jim Butternut is close but not the real sweet potato taste. The skin is my favorite part! I cut open the potato and add butter, a sprinkle of brown sugar, a sqirt of lime and some fresh cilantro--heavenly...
I will ask my friend if she has any dog shows southwesterly Jim. She wouldnt mine transporting a dog for you.

Soup is cooking...got to go and deliver some eggs...later! TerriOstillhearingTommysneezing

good evening everyone,

nice and dry here. Guess what, I captured another japanese Bantam, Only one at large. I didn't see it so maybe it is long gone.
When I got home I checked the open run and there she was. I put tons of seeds, black sunflower seeds, bird seed and sail flowerseeds. she was in the rain shelter. I closed off the exits and went it. She flew above me and escaped through a crack in the doorway that I hadn't covered. She flew out of the coop and into a tree. I got mad and threw a stick at the tree, she flew off into some brush I got close and she flew into my back yard. Good thing the dogs weren't out. I followed her until she cornered herself. I threw a sheet over her, bundled it good and then put her in the coop. I checked on her about 1/2 hour later and she was on the perch talking to the other girls. One more left but I am not holding out any hope.

Have a good evening

Hi All,
Anyone going to Fond du Lac this weekend? My sister and I plan on going to it.
I'm really looking for Mille Fleur OEGBs. Anyone around there have some for sale? Would be willing to drive a little farther if you're not going to the swap. Also looking for other colors in OEGBs.
My sister is looking for a black swan hen, a Richardson gander and some other birds, (can't remember what she all wanted).
It's a long drive, hope we find something good, though I'm sure we'll enjoy it, we always do!

just had this emailed to me in case anyone is interested in testing birds

Terri the reason I haven't tried sweet potatoes is the long growing season and my late/early frosts. I also love to eat them and they are now considered one of the healthiest of veggies. When I have checked into ordering slips I know you have to do it early and also have to buy a fairly large quantity,,,split orders maybe with some other cheeseheads?

Jim you do know that dog from Kansas won't let you have beer on the property,,,,at least on Sundays,,,that would cut into the fun watching football

Evening To All.... not alot new here today either.
We planted the sweet potato slips a couple years. They turned out ok, although not as large as the store bought ones....I'm with Jim and just use the buttercup squash. It makes wonderful pies too. Easier to just grow the squash.

Home grown supper tonight...Roasted free range Buckeye cockeral with buttercup squash, home grown russets with fresh buns. Prolly chicken soup with the good stuff that's leftover.

Charles Woodson is out for 6 weeks with a broken collar bone.....time for the youngens to step up.

Is amyable on vacation in Hawaii too?

good P<M , I sold two pullets this afternoon.. I checked in the coop tonight when I locked them up.. the flock is looking kind of skinny.. I still have too many, but it sure is whittling down..

somebody in Merrill has a pair of India blue peafowl.. 3 yrs old.. $150.oo for the pair OBO..

Dave, your neighbors will never want you to get rid of your chickens.. watching you chase them is better than TV..

yeah Brent, buttercup squash,,, aka lazy man's sweet potato..

speaking of which.. Annie finished digging the spuds this AM.. got another bushel plus..

The guy came and picked up Ollie.. seemed not too concerned about getting it running..

Dan, the dog is a watch dog, not a temperance hound.. he will have to learn to watch me drink a brew during the game..I think Minn has that sober Sunday law, too.. I lived there for a couple of years.. we bought our beer on Sat and drank at home.. They did not sell booze at public dances either,, but you could bring your own bottle as long as you bought the mixer there.. and you could not leave with an open bottle.. IDK what they did with all those partial bottles..

Unka~starting your own slips is easy to do. Ever grown a sweet potato vine? Exactly the same thing. About them not getting as big as the ones in the store? That's because most of those aren't sweet potatoes they're YAMS! Only us southerners know that they are NOT the same thing!!! completely different plants. Any place else and yams are cattle feed. If you google them, the next time you go shopping you will be able to tell the difference. You want to make sure you get you some sweet potatoes to get slips from and you will be good to go. Plan to do it myself next year. Even had the slips grown this year but with building the new coop, etc. they never got rooted in time to put in the ground.

Had bear for supper tonight. Neighbor shot one this year and gave us a slab for sharing our leftover bear bait from last year. This one looked like it would be a bit "chewy" so I made stroganoff out of it. With a little extra worchestershire sauce to mask the back taste it came out yummy (but still a bit chewy).

Well, time for the debate.
