Yep.... guess the Zombies are taking over the chickens first! LOL
Whoever wanted to know who uses fermented feed.... I have for about a year now. They get fermented mash in the morning along with the table scraps. I have my mash bucket and mix about 7/8 feed and 1/8 cracked corn.... sometimes I add dry dog food if I feel they need more protein or rolled oats. The first time I made it I let it set for 48 hours. Now I leave about 1/4 of the mash in the bucket and add the new and warm water. The "leftover" mash gets the new mash going. In 24 hours I got my new batch. You want it to get a grey hue on top, like other people say "that's the good stuff".
I guess if you used a NESCO as a brooder.... you'd have a head start on roast chicken.
Hope Twain is OK.... going to be tough changing so much at once.
JJ... congrats on your green egg!
Bf4m.... Awwwww
Yep, I want to see the "electric Petow sock" and "hen woolies" too!
Well, the kitten didn't make it
It was eating good at first then stopped. I tried to make sure it was "stimulated" so it would go potty and all. I don't know what was wrong. It was 3/4 the size of the rest. I don't think mom had enough milk for all of them. She is so small herself, but I thought it would do OK once I started feeding him.
Good news is the others are doing great! "Little Moe" even tried a bit of cheese!
More good news is "Tumbles" the hen with the wrey neck that I have been nursing along for months.... laid me a pretty blue egg today!
First one she laid since she was "sick"!
Guess that's it.... Night All!
Good Chilly Morning Everybody! Cind so sorry to hear about the kitten! Just wasn't meant to be. Thanks for the mash tips I'll look into it when I have an inside day and I'm caught up.
Glad Tumbles is laying sounds like a good job on your part! If I ever see one of the "Beware of the Chickens" mats I'm getting it! OMG that fits so well. CC that's all called "Good Stuff". I just love building something without having to go buy parts. Thanks for the first big laugh of the day! Thought you were making a statement to Big fam when I saw the first pic.
My Lard Butt [BA] looks just like that from behind.
Bf4me AWWWW their so fluffy! Congrats! Bigz Have been wondering if it was the weather this year or just the type of carrot I planted but ours are real sweet too. Put in Nantes.
H&R! MLH sounds like Twain has his own quarry goin there. Hope this passes. Pun intended. OWWWIE! TO sounds like the perfect set up one broody, one raising. Dan thanks for the offer on fermeted mash like I said when I get time to look it up. When I do and if I have ?'s I'll pm ya or something. Got the box made on the flat bed yesterday. Sure doesn't look like much for the time I have in it. But it's good and sturdy and done right. And CC all with "good stuff". Just need one more pin for the tail gate. Went to do chores at Donny's yesterday morning and out he came. Almost yelled at him until he told me him and his son were going for B'fast. Then later he called me to tell me that I didn't have to come over to water the cows because of the rain. I told him I was just there and drained the hoses and plugged in the pump house heater.
He had a bunch of company so I didn't bother him. Looks like a hodge podge day today. Have to go get some scratch for Donny's chickens, get tractor gas, do chores, and cut some wood. Think Donny's chickens are coming over here to lay he got 2 we got 7.
wow, one "crispy" morning! looks like a skating rink out back. ANYTHING that can hold water is frozen!!!
Not supposed to be out of the 30's for us today. yuch. and windy. Wish my new clear tarps for the run would have showed up already. Not looking forward to hanging those in a 20 something windchill which is what we are supposed to have for days.
BF4~wow! you need to make a "wide load" sign for that chookie!!!! She is a gorgeous girl tho
Well, guess I need to get outside and make sure I don't have chookie sickles. It was 25o when I got up. My remote said that it was still 38o in the coop but it doesn't sit near the floor, it's a little above roost high and placed where the chooks can't get to it.
Morning all! I spent several hours reading a new to me wheat-free cookcook. Making me anxious to try bread baking again...my first efforts werent so great! LOL!
The radio has said that the fire down the road was arson...they are looking for help from the community. In the other direction there have been 2 robberies and one stolen car in the last week! I am wondering what in the name of God is going on in peoples' minds! We moved our family out of the city so we didnt have to deal with that stuff (we thought). I guess the days are truly over for leaving the keys in the cars and the house unlocked...sh!t now I have to find keys to the house! The police told my neighbor that there is a heroin ring in my town and the kids are going into houses in the country looking for cash to support their habits. Even when people are home! I wish my dogs were more aggressive.
36* here this morning...but the sun is shining! I have to head out soon and will be wearing my coveralls! BBRRR! My blood is not thick enough yet for sure. Hard to believe DD and I had shorts on and sat out in the sun 2 days ago!
Does anyone know where to get "Fishzole?" It is the Metrondiasole(?) that you can get OTC. I want to treat my hen with canker with it and see if it works. I wonder if Blodgetts has it?
Google here I come! LOL!
Tommy hears a roo outside my window crowing and now he is doing it too. That is a really loud sound right next to your ear for sure! OWWW!
Great looking chicks BigFam...I dont have any white Ameracaunas (just sayin'...)
CC is that one of Moose's kids? WHat a fluffy butt! First I thought she was a cochin with all those feathers...
Sorry about the kitty Cind,
I hate when babies die! Speaking of....last night I was closing up and had just tossed cracked corn in the barn isle, turned around to put the scoop back and SS's only baby ran right under my boot!
I was so ticked at my self! I had just been admiring that little one cause it was starting to look just like it's Mama...had to put it out of it's misery....I wont go into details--still disturbs me greatly! Interesting about the fermented mash...what are the benefits? And more importantly, to those that do it, have you seen and benefits? Sounds like a while lot more work to me!
OK I better get outside. I have a really old lady to sit with today...she is 105!!! Gotta bring some magazines along I think...
Have a fantastic day everyone! Vicki and others--I hope you thaw out up there! Sheesh that is chilly! I still have my hoses out...dont want to drag them through the mud to get them into the well pit...not yet.
JJ--we all know that you pick!
Great doormat too...if anybody finds one of those I NEED one for sure! Just looked for that same pic but of my porch...cant find it!
TerriO
Between 11 pm and 11 am today we have 5 more chicks! This woman's Ameraucaunas are very hardy! I think I only tossed 2 or 3 eggs as quitters. We already have 8 hatched! I am still waiting for the single lemon cuckoo, the 2 cream legbars, and my 2 farm hybrids. PLEASE HATCH!
Ok... I'll say it. The only bird I regret getting rid of was Hershey. (Also known as the wide load pullet of CC's) I JUST LOVE HER! It's probably sick and wrong, but I am completely in love with her chickie butt. I just want to pick her up and squish her! Seriously... I might drive all the way down to CC just to squish that little chickie girl!!!
I better go. The kids are all home from school. I don't get much peace to post!
Oh and Terri... I didn't plan on this many Ameracaunas actually hatching since I have terrible hatch rates. If I get too many, i know just who to give some too...
good cool AM,
I liked the tweet cartoon.. I would like a door mat like that too..
DrH, I just cleaned off my flatbed trailer.. I had side racks on it, but my nephew borrowed the trailer and broke two of them.. They were 2x10's.. don't ask me how they broke them.. I have been wanting to make new sides for awhile.. I could use them today because I have to pick up a small load of straw bales.. Brian also has 3 real nice barred rock roosters I can pick up.. Then I can get rid of this cross breed one I saved..
I am working on a deal that should come to a head on Nov 8.. I will tell you all about it after the deed is done..
took Dora to the vet yesterday.. Distemper, Rabies and ear drops.. $105.oo .. she sure is an expensive date..
I sure will be happy after the election is over.. we get sooooo many campaign calls.. Annie got one yesterday that blocked her from hanging up on it.. that is a bit much, in my opinion..
More than borders on just plain rude.. that is no way to win my vote, eh ?
Nice soaking rain we had, eh? the wind took a couple of barns down just west of here.. and I mean completely down.. just to the south of us they had quarter sized hail.. dented a few cars, for sure.. IDK what we had here, I slept through most of it..
Instead of fermenting the feed, just sort of do as TerriO does, give your chicks a shot of beer each day..
