WOW! you guys have been chatty!!! Congrats to everyone on the venzun. Got all my hunters out the door and the sun is starting to come up. Hope somebody gets one more for our freezer. Think I told you before venzun is the only red meat I can eat that doesn't give me problems (unless we pay a fortune for buffalo) it's got to be the lack of growth hormones or other chemicals in the meat. don't have that problem with chicken.

BF4~Icelandics, hmmmmmmmm. Not familiar with them. Have to Google. Ok, guys, cut it out!!! You are all super enablers!!!!

I have to try and get a pic today after my hunters head for home of an egg my Soup laid on Friday. Leave it at that for now.

Oh, BTW, scored a good deal on freeze dried mealworms on Ebay. Got them for $13.50 + free ship for a full pound! they arrived yesterday in 2 priority boxes and are just fine. That's twice the worms for less money than from FF (which I found is actually cheaper than Walmart for these). A full pound is A LOT of worms! My girls were very happy campers!!!

ordering more this morning before the price goes up

good morning,, been up since 5 AM.. many games of free cell already..

David, I had nothing but Buff Orpingtons when I first started out.. It is not true that they are not good layers.. I have only a couple of offspring from the original "7" that I started out with,, "just for eggs".. they are very winter hardy, lay well all winter long, and butcher very easily.. the hens are not super big.. the roosters get medium large for butchering.. I know you are not big into the butchering aspect.. they have the same temperament as the red stars..

Kim, I know which chicken that was who liked to sneak past you to get out.. the very red one, right? I had to catch her a couple of times, too.. she was the tamest one in the bunch..

today I am going to select a bunch of oak boards for my side rails for the trailer.. lots of planing and sawing ahead of me.. I bought 4 more stake pockets .. I am going to make the side rails two 4 feet piece instead of one 8 footer.. going to try to make it all symetrical so there will not be any left or right racks.. all the side racks should be interchangeable.. hope I can pull that one off..
lots of exact measurements ahead of me..

all cuppa'd up, getting light out.. going to get an early start..

I am in and out.. but wanted to share this, perhaps Terri could use it, its in Lake Mills. The internet is acting up so I'll just post the link, copy and paste as needed http://madison.craigslist.org/grd/3417138522.html And I am severely ****** off at my friend and her DH, they suddenly decided to send several of their fowl into Freezer camp. My problem, they are culling hens because the DH is too ignorant to know hens from roosters. They dispatched an Egyptian Faumi (sp?) because she seemed to have spurs. They have 6 buff Orp roosters, but he doesn't know what saddle feathers are, or that they have bigger combs than their siblings.
They have 3 of the 6 but thought that was all...
I have pointed out the differences to both of them too many times..
I guess when they only have chickens that crow, and no eggs, they will figure it out.

David I have two buff orpingtons. They are the favorites of our layers. Very calm and friendly, lay pretty steady even through their molt and in the winter. They are like the Golden Retrievers of the chicken world.

Congrats to those who have gotten deer so far. DH shot a nice 10 pointer during early bow season and our freezer is pretty full now. We had bought 1/2 a beef and a whole pig from friend who raise them plus our own 20 broilers and a couple of turkeys. So he is out hunting but being very selective, if he sees one it has to be a really nice one to shoot. Plus our group does the QDM thing so they only shoot 8 points or better unless your under 18 yrs old or over 70 yrs. So next weekend when DD goes she could shoot a doe or a smaller buck if she has the chance to.

Another deer bites the dust! DD's BF got his buck this morning. A nice 9 pointer that had a broken skull and a broken jaw. Rack was still intact so no idea what happened to this poor guy. I forgot to mention that the deer my DD shot yesterday also had a broken leg, so he was pasted by a car at some point (explains the broken rack). DH will be one PITA to deal with if he gets skunked. He is not competitive most of the time, until he is hunting or fishing...... the look out!

Speaking of DH, the tractor has been primed and the majority of it has the 1st coat of AC orange on it. Looks really good! He is doing a fantastic job of restoring it, and I am so happy he finally has his hands on a tractor so he can do what he loves best: ripping engines apart, fixing them, and putting them back together. I will be happier when it is out of the garage though........ you can hardly move in there.

I will get some pics when he has it finished and to a before and after.

Stopped at the little bakery in Amherst yesterday and loaded up on goodies to take to the in-laws. Chocolate croissants, Almond croissants, honey bears (like an elephant ear but baked), and Eclairs filled with chocolate bavarian creame, fresh rosemary bread, a loaf of chocolate cherry sweetbread, and a baguette. They make all their stuff so no mixes here! Very yummy! I had half of a choc and almond croissant for breakfast this morning..... and I think I will need to run 10 miles to work it off!

Glad to see you back ODr.H! Gotta love having that alphabet soup after your name....

Time for a second cup of java and get motivated. Lots to do and little time to get it done.

Jim,

Thanks, so the orfintons are the same temperament as the gold stars? That is good to know. I can get gold stars locally and save shipping.

anyone else have them.

thanks

David

David, I have 2 buff orps. Absolutely love them. Very good, dependable layers of large eggs, cold hardy & calm/friendy. Actually all the orps are, regardless of color. I recommend them highly.

I went out deer hunting with my grandpa and our heater in our stand/shack on stilts did something unusual.

<-- the heater red part is the heat place can is propane can yellow tube is the part which carries propane to heat place

the story (true story)
My grandpa and i were just sittin in our deer shack on stilts and the heater got turned its self up.
hmm.png
<-- it was unusual because we didnt turn it up. so grandpa turned it down. then, fire was on the outside of it between the heater part and the outside protection stuff. so my grandpa turned it off.......it kept going ... gettin hotter
fl.gif
<--(me dont start on fire) the he is screwing the propane can off and the part where the yellow tube and the propane can meet..., starts on fire! -
ep.gif
<-- and we were in a shack that hadcarpet made of wood with loaded guns..
th.gif
<-- my grandpa quickly screws the propane can off and the heater spits alittle fire at him and me and is done.
bow.gif
<--

well i hope that gave you all some excitment! P.S. we saw NO deer at all that was the best most fun part of hte trip.

Yikes! Glad you are OK.

Orpingtons..I have English

I love the breed. It is the only one I keep pure and show. They lay about 150 eggs a year. The American Orpingtons lay about 200. They are the best when they are allowed to do free range so they do not get fat and have egg laying issues. I found if you cull hard for slow egg production early on you end up with a great strain that lays well for 5 years with out issues. (English..I do not know about American). My birds get to about 10-12 lbs at full maturity.
