Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning,,  been up since 5 AM..  many games of free cell already..

David,  I had nothing but Buff Orpingtons when I first started out..  It is not true that they are not good layers..  I have only a couple of offspring from the original  "7"  that I started out with,, "just for eggs"..   they are very winter hardy, lay well all winter long, and butcher very easily..  the hens are not super big..  the roosters get medium large for butchering..  I know you are not big into the butchering aspect..  they have the same temperament as the red stars..

Kim, I know which chicken that was who liked to sneak past you to get out.. the very red one, right?  I had to catch her a couple of times, too..  she was the tamest one in the bunch..

today I am going to select a bunch of oak boards for my side rails for the trailer..  lots of planing and sawing ahead of me..  I bought 4 more stake pockets .. I am going to make the side rails two 4 feet piece instead of one 8 footer..  going to try to make it all symetrical so there will not be any left or right racks.. all the side racks should be interchangeable..  hope I can pull that one off..
lots of exact measurements ahead of me..

all cuppa'd up, getting light out.. going to get an early start..

Yes that would be her, she is gone now I think she is the 1 who went swimming.......poor girl......friendly and brave to the end......
Have fun with the trailer sides ......bet it will be a doozey when you are done. Hows that cute little pup this am......... getting into mischief I bet....... does he go in his mansion yet?
My big boys are doing good still growing and eating like crazy...they love when I bring treats out to the chickens they always get some, except the dry oatmeal I sprinkle around sometimes, they really love scrambled eggs too like the girls.......... I added a can of tuna and some corn to it today everyone ate with relish.........spoiled little buggers.
Congrats on all the deer, wish we had gotten to go, but there is always next year if we live through the end of the world Dec, 21st, maybe we will get to go yet. I miss venison in my freezer the last couple years all we have seen out there is small, or way to far away to even think about shooting at it........

Now Jim I guess I did need a scolding about my complaining self......... but you all, are all I have to complain too.......... I haven't said much to Adam, because I do not want to make this harder for him, I know it isn't easy on him either, so I have said little about my deepest feelings for now.....I have just been venting my displeasure here so I get it all out b4 he gets home..... I want him to concentrate on his job and getting his butt home safely with his load in tact. I have stood beside him every step of the way for anything he ever wanted to do, and will always do so......I may be blonde , but I ain't one of those dingy bleached brunettes to start with............. give me a little credit will ya.............OK now I will shut up about it ...I guess everyone was sick of me whining if Jim had to holler at me..........

David I have BO and I love mine, I have 5 an older hen from last spring, and 4 young pullets who are all laying and doing well from this May, Jim is right the breed does not get enough credit, they are good layers a nice big brown egg, 5 or so a week, that isn't bad.... they are quite large at least mine seem to be, my roosters last year 4 of them anyway weighed out at 6 1/2 lbs or 7 at 22 weeks, and even my girls seem big, I'm guessing 4 or 5 lbs hens, and next to my other hens I think they are the largest....except maybe not quite as big as wide load the Delaware AKA Smarty pants...I"ll grab some pictures when I'm out and post for ya, they are nice chickens friendly and talkative too.....

Gotta go finish my friends patio door today, only need to put the varnish on yet, the new steal doors now look just like her oak trim...... what a job, but they turn out real pretty when they are done.
Critters are all out roaming around enjoying this weather, so guess I best get out there too.....later all........Kim

Pictures of the doors so ya all don't think I'm nuts and Puppies being lazy today, Bear is hiding asleep in the lean too...

good morning, another great day in the north country

OneD,,,,get your grandpa to return that heater to the store and count you blessings you weren't hurt,,,,I worked in the propane industry for 12 yrs, those stories don't usually turn out well

I have one Golden Orp,,,one of those "if you want these you have to take her" kinda deals when I got my BSL's,,,think she was at least 1 year old then,,,she started laying the week I moved them in and hasn't slowed down in over a year, 4-5 eggs a week. Good hen, forages, quiet, doesn't mess with any other bird, I'm sure she's a hatchery bird but a good one

almost hate taking the inside time to watch the game,,,but will since I don't get the games on the radio this year,,,what happened to the Packer Radio network? I loved those "Ole boys"

Good day of Search/Rescue training with the Aussie, lovely weather, think I'll get the boys out for a walk and blow the stink of them (as grandma would say).

The Iowa Blues aren't huge birds, but are large fowl. Mine are 4-6 pounds, the historical listing for the breed is 5-7, but most of the lines still around are smaller and variable at that. I'm selecting towards a little larger, back towards their dual purpose original purpose as a foraging homesteader type of breed. They are quite cold and heat tolerant and pretty easy keepers in the feed department. I love them, hoping to have a bunch of them this spring so I can build up numbers to select breeding stock from.

I always see the kitty link when they are ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZzZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Cuties, for sure.

I should send DH deer hunting sometime, could use the bones/meat to supplement the dogs' rations. I do partially feed raw, partially kibble. I like to mix it up, give them variety. I've found they tend to have sensitive stomachs when they only get one thing always. Seem to be much more tolerant when the diet changes around. Should probably hit up the people who process venison for people. Bet they have lots of meaty bones available that I could load into the freezer.

OK, off for a walk with the boys.

Ok Got some pictures of the ladies while out enjoying the sunny day..........i tried putting Snowflake back with the flock, they are picking at her and chasing her, not sure if they don't remmeber her or see she isn't yet back to her old self, so they want to peck her down a peg or 2........So I brought her back in....... she is much calmer in teh caghe now......poor little girl she is even smaller that my smallest SS now and she was the biggest..next to the egg eater anyway she was quite fat........ grrrr so here are pictures.........

Ghost, whenever a chicken has been missing from the flock for more than a couple of days, it is like they don't remember them & will gang up on the "stranger". You'll probably have to put her & her cage in the coop for a few days so they get used to seeing her before you let her loose with them again. I find that this helps greatly in the reintroduction process.
Don't get frustrated. Be happy you still have her. She is one lucky hen to have survived her ordeal.

What a beautiful day!!! And looks like this weather will continue!

Quick question/advice: I finally have 2 sweet Roos' and they are HUGE!!!!! I am worried about their constant attention to my females. I have a couple females limping on any given day. Ive noticed with these boys they chase the girls all over then grab wahtever they can until they can take the hen down. Frustrating and yet Im tryign to remember that this is nature. My old Roo sure wasnt this rough with the girls. WIll this settle down a little with maturity?

Anyone else have hens still moulting? I have one right now that only has head, neck and a few wings feathers-otherwise nothing but porcupine/goose flesh :-(
