What a beautiful day!!! And looks like this weather will continue!

Quick question/advice: I finally have 2 sweet Roos' and they are HUGE!!!!! I am worried about their constant attention to my females. I have a couple females limping on any given day. Ive noticed with these boys they chase the girls all over then grab wahtever they can until they can take the hen down. Frustrating and yet Im tryign to remember that this is nature. My old Roo sure wasnt this rough with the girls. WIll this settle down a little with maturity?

Anyone else have hens still moulting? I have one right now that only has head, neck and a few wings feathers-otherwise nothing but porcupine/goose flesh :-(

My 1 little BSL Suzie hasn't yet molted or even started she is still laying, and barebacked.......... I'm getting pretty worried she will not molt and freeze.... she is not showing any feather growth anywhere........ so hope you get an answer .... quick I'm also wondering what the Heck.... everyone else has finished or still has a few porcupine quills.

Hi All!

Wcc..... Sounds like your friends (or at least the chickens) would be better of if they didn't have any. Besides ignoring what you have to say, sounds like the don't look things up either.

OneD.... Man that was close! Glad your OK. Hope your grandpa didn't get burned trying to turn it off.

Delish.... Nice looking hen. She looks like my Cochins.

GR.... we all got vent sometimes, and this is a good place to do it. If we don't want to "hear" it.... we can just skip it!

Door looks good! Nice hens! Greybeard looks allot like Prettyboy!

Angie.... I still have a few in the "porcupine" stage but getting there. Storky is also broody again!

BBL.... CU!

Ang, they will calm down as they get a little older. It is frustrating to see, I know.

Ghost, my Aussie didn't molt her 1st winter. She was bare backed the whole time & she did fine. You could get her a saddle to help protect her from the roos & the cold.

The roosters sound like cockerels..cockerels have no manners and need a few lessons sometimes. You might want to try the *my chicken* lesson for a day and see if that works. It works for me for those aggressive young cockerels. It does calm down after a while, however this is not the time of the year for the poor hens to have missing feathers from ruff treatment. Sounds like they need to be taken down a peg or two.

Ghost-I had quite a few with bare backs-thought they were just not going to moult or had already. Somehow they slowly have moulted. Then this one hen-suddenly went thru a major moult. I swear I think she dropped all her feathers ina couple fo days it seems like. She is so pathetic though-shes shivering and even looked weak today-she would stand off by herself and would look like her legs would just give out! I gave them some mealworms and BOSS hoping the extra protein will help. Tried cuddling her on her roost tonight to warm her a lil but shes my least friendly hen (scared). Poor thing. I need to take pics-never had one with this major of a moult.

BBP-its Carmelita the Black Orp that you thought might have been part Pendesaca

Anyone care to share a good GF bread recipe? Any recipes for bread machines?

I have 2 hens that just molted like that. No tail feathers at all and a bunch of gross pin feathers all over the body. Today I discovered Rum Chata. It's like drinking the milk after eating a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch. Maybe like sweetened condensed milk with cinnamon added. All I can say is it's tasty. If I drank coffee I would put it in there every morning.

Molting birds...most of mine finished up a while ago, but I still have one that just went mostly bald...hoping she gets her feathers quick with the cold. Then again...I still have one hens hat prefers to sleep outside every night. It is inside the run, but she prefers that to inside. She went in once a week or two ago, but that was it.
Oh and about buff orps...they are a very pretty and one of my sweetest birds, but incredibly broody. My one BO has bee broody four times this year and I can't break her brood when she goes.

Egg production is up and down every day. The more I think about it Unk....we will be talking come spring about those olive eggers...either eggs or ch iks or pullets...we will figure out something!

Otherwise trying to get ready for a houseful on thanksgiving and potty training one twelve week old pup!

This is great gluten free bread

1. Whisk the following together in a large mixing bowl:

1 cup brown rice flour
1/2 cup certified gluten free oat flour*
3/4 cup millet flour
1/2 cup tapioca flour
1/3 cup arrowroot starch, or cornstarch
1/3 cup sweet rice flour, also called Mochiko
1/4 cup flax seed meal
1 Tablespoon xanthan gum
3 Tablespoons brown sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons salt

*Bob’s Red Mill makes gluten free rolled oats; save money by pulverizing the rolled oats into oat flour in a food processor.

I had a difficult time finding sweet rice flour. If you can’t locate certain items at local stores, try ordering them on line.

2. In a separate, medium-sized bowl whisk together the following:

3 eggs (must be at room temperature)
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1 Tablespoon molasses
4 Tablespoons
(half a stick) butter or butter substitute, melted
1 cup warm water
(80-105° F)
1/4 cup plain yogurt, buttermilk, sour milk or whatever you have (also room temp)

You want your wet mixture to be at or just above 80° F so the yeast activates properly in the machine; use your basic kitchen thermometer and check the wet mixture’s temperature as you add the ingredients, you may need to alter the temperature of the warm water to bring the temperature up or down here.

3. Pour the wet mixture in the bread machine pan and then layer the flour mixture on top (not mixing the two.)
4. Create a small indentation in the flour with a spoon and pour 1 packet of active dry yeast (found in the baking aisle of your grocery store) in the hole.

5. Select the two-pound loaf size and use the Basic Rapid (or something similar) setting, which ends up being about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Some newer model bread machines have a gluten-free setting. As it gets going, you’ll want to scrape the sides with a spatula to make sure all the flours incorporate into the wet mixture.
6. Patience! The same goes for bread machine loaves as does for traditionally baked loaves, wait for the loaf to cool completely before slicing it. Don’t refrigerate the loaf. If you don’t eat the entire loaf within two days, slice and freeze it (in freezer-specific bags.)
