Wisdom teeth removal cost question

I had 3 of mine pulled 450$ 10 years ago? the last one is impacted and they told me it would do damage if I left it in as it would push my teeth forward. They suggested to get me knocked out and have oral surgery for over 1000$--I kept the tooth and it hasnt done a thing to my other teeth-my regular dentist makes sure:-) Id get a 2nd opinion just in case

Now you see, that makes a lot more sense to me. With the prices I quoted you, your oral surgeon is right in line.

Now the next question is this:

Do they REALLY need to be removed? I have patients in their 40s and 50s walking around with full bony impacted wisdom teeth that they will never need to worry about.
That said, if they look like they are growing INTO the adjacent teeth in front of them, then they must be removed before the roots are fully formed.

Sounds like the Ex is just going to need to suck it up and write out a check.
I had four bony impacteds removed as an 18 year old and let me tell you, it's nice to have mom there to baby you.

You definitely want the prescriptions written out before hand and picked up. He should take the pain med prior to going into the office and then have him take another 1/2 of a pain pill before the surgeon packs his mouth with cotton.

He'll most likely be putting sutures in and will need to return a week later to have them removed.
When you get him home, have ice available. 10 minutes on once side, 10 minutes on the others side, back and forth every 10 minutes for the first two full hours after he gets home. You will have to sit there and supervise because after you get him home and the pain pills are doing their thing, he'll just want to sleep. After the first two hours you can let him sleep but have the pain pills at the ready with small bits of soft bread or other soft/semi liquid food that he can swallow (so the pills don't cause heartburn or stomach upset-- nothing worse than vomiting over a surgical site)

Every situation is different so follow the Oral Surgeons post-op instructions to the letter.

Good luck and God bless.

I had all four of mine pulled about 30 years ago, didn't cost much actually, and the dentist gave me several pain pills to take one at a time later. I don't "do" pain, so I took them all at once when the pain started after the anesthetic wore off. I splept for two days, and when I finally woke up there was no pain whatsoever. Yeah, yeah, I know... stupid, but like I said... I don't "do" pain, and I'm still here.

It was around 1500 for me to get knocked out at a surgery center and extract 4 I think. It was about 10 years ago,so I am thinking that is a good price.

Take care of the surgical sites too....NOT fun having dry sockets! It was pretty painful for me! Rinse and more rinse but NO sucking.

I had asked my father how much my surgery was with two coming out and two impacted, it cost insurance company $3,000 twenty five years ago, done by an oral max. specialist surgeon. He was goooooood!

Like Mahroni said, get the pain killers ahead of time, it is going to feel great!

On the day before surgery, eat all he could because he is going to be hungry and wants solids but you wont feel like it for a few days. I've had soups and jello and puddings and pieces of bread or crackers.

Well I just got my wisdom teeth (all 4) taken out last Tuesday. The estimate was around $1400-1600. My other friend just got hers taken out a day before me and hers cost $2000. So I dont think $1500 is too bad for everything. Goodluck to your son! I thought this was one of my worst experiences in my life with pain, but I do have a low pain tolerance.

Well after an evening of email battling with the ex, he has finally agreed (after threat of attorney, court and bodily harm...lol) to cough up his share.

Maybe all of the BYC vibes helped.

Our older son had this same procedure done 3 years ago and the prices was just about the same. Our surgeon is fantastic. He even calls later in the day and the next day to check on them personally.

Thankfully this will be the last planned major expense that I have to do battle over with the ex. WooHoo!

Thank you again everyone for the input. As always...BYCers rock!

Camelot Farms, you should make an appointment with Mahonri, for the price difference you can have a vacation along with the dental work.

Yeah, one more note... my upper ones were out and pushing on the back molars, they HAD to go.

The lowers are buried and posed no threat, hence leaving them alone.

MY gums are shrinking, which is why the lowers are now showing and need to be removed. But without the gum issue they'd have been perfectly fine being left there.

So, agree with the others. Ask if they HAVE to be taken...
