Setting... 10 hens 1 19w cockerel? (Long story) and 7 chicks about 9wks (6 pullets 1 cockerel). Coop has 4 roosts 8ft each and 3 level nesting area that i haven't put deviders in yet possible 9 box space total.

The story...

My 10 girls roost on bars 1 and 2 (top obviously). Mama, one of the 10 just went back to roost after brooding her chicks for nearly 9 wks. Roosty, the older cockerel isn't allowed past the 4th roost in 10 weeks he just hasn't be let up. The chicks can all get on the roosts be still prefer sleeping in the nests.

Mama only went back to the roosts 3 nights ago. Last night after dark I went to move the chicks to the roost, i saw all 7 when i went in I closed the door behind me but as I'm placing them I only count 6. I looked and looked but figured she was hiding in a corner just out of sight. This morning she was in the coop as i expected.

So tonight i go to close up the coop and move the chicks again. I move Roosty to the far side, then the chicks starting with the young cockerel 1,2,3...6? Wait 7 is missing again...

So i glance up just right and there is this little 9 week old pullet up on the second roost between 2 of the big girls like that's always been her place, when i can't even get this nearly full grown rooster on the 3rd roost.

I just wish I could have gotten a picture. Only 1 of 7 chicks was on the roost and an upper roost at that...

Haha!! Have had the same thing happen....it was cute.

We can tell you what normally happens, what you can usually expect. But they are living animals, no one can tell you what will happen each and every time. No matter what anyone says on here there are always going to be exceptions. A lot of times these exceptions are what makes chicken TV better than anything on cable, antenna, or satellite. Thanks for the story, I like it.
