I did the deep-litter method with my coop, but used straw, and changed that out once a month. Straw is heavy and can be a pain to compost, though, so I'm thinking that wood shavings are in my future.

I always clean the coop wearing "coop boots" (rubber ones that stand up well to poo and other grossness and can be hosed off), a long-sleeved shirt, jeans, and a drywall mask. Breathing in all that dust is not healthy.

Chicken Lady -- I'm pretty sure between what I inhaled and what I ate, half of the nastiness that was in the coop is now making it's way through my lungs and digestive system.

I'm totally NOT done. It looks alot better, though...I'd finish it today, but the trailer I was hauling the junk with is broken. The freakin' latch sprung, and I wasn't even USING the latch. That, of course, is my luck...now I've gotta listen to my dad about it. I'm so mad! I was almost done cleaning up the inside and about to bring in the mulch. I've got some stuff to fix in there, too....need the stuff to fix it with before winter gets here....need the money to fix it....need help with the actual fixing part.

I did mine yesterday as well as the duck shelters. I've got the sore muscles to show for it but it was worth it! You'll be fine! You may be the OLDnewchick but you're still young!

* Think I'd steal somebody else's idea and toss a tarp down over that cleared dirt floor and put the new bedding on top. Be MUCH EASIER to clean next time around!!!
