Wit’s End Farm Ramblings

Made a little tree fort for some enrichment today and was able to add some ventilation to their coop with the warm weather. All they did was judge, ungrateful freeloaders 😒

Truth! Chickens can be so incredibly judgemental. When I was building an addition onto our first coop the girls would swing by to hop up on anything they could to check things out.

Really great pictures! Such curious ladies 😊

This one (barred OEGB?) has been dubbed Tiny Tim. We can’t believe it’s this bitty!!! How can it even exist??? Extreme cuteness 🥺😍🥺

I had hoped the babies would be smart enough to get back into the brooder, did not think through the elevated base very well 😅 Turned the lamp on before dark and everyone made it back in!

I also sold three little cockerels today, before I got too attached. Two of them were my first hatched babies 😭 Luckily KoolAid, the first one that hatched, looks pretty pullety so far

EVERY bird my husband chooses and names dies. I’m feeling so run down with all the deaths lately. We had a sudden cold snap and I dreamed all night about finding one of my 4 week olds dead. They just moved outside and I gave them the lamp, but they’ve been roosting instead. The WTBs have been fully feathered for weeks, lamp moved up higher progressively, and they’re 10 weeks old… They should have been ok! It looks like he was smothered. He was a gorgeous colour, had cheek poofs, and was going to throw beautiful eggs with my older girls 😭 I still have a Welsummer roo, but it will be longer and I’d hoped to not have chicks over winter. So my Olive Egger project will likely be pushed back to next year and I didn’t want a roo for that long

We’re finally out of flockdown! Kicked these broody butts out (the Columbians) and everyone is just so happy to stretch their legs

Been waiting to see how long it took the neighbour's roo to notice all our ladies lol. Poor guy has lost his whole flock to birds of prey now… I’m struggling between wanting to let our girls free range and knowing this has been the ultimate buffet

The ladies are unimpressed with his dancing 😂
