With what do you scoop your poop?!

Never seem to have piles in my yard as the dogs think they are treats!

I am the designated poo collector. I use a small garden trowel, dustpan and rubber garden gloves. Works for me. Although when we were at Petco I saw the dog scoopers and thought that would be a bit more effective.

My dogs are with ya'll!!! I wouldn't have to scoop anything if I just let the dogs in there. My male pug LOVES to snort up all the yummy treats the chickens leave just for him. After he cleans up what he can find he runs over the chickens and licks them on the face!!! I guess it's his way of saying THANKS!!!

Well, I know why we can't let the dogs in the coop....caught my young garbage disposal coming out of the little chick's brooder pen, licking his lips! He's the one that keeps cleaning us out of feed in there!! I thought the big girls were using the little feeder because they were too lazy to take a couple more steps into their own house to eat. Nope. Just my ever hungry, will-eat-anything pup! :thun If he could get into the big coop he would eat all the eggs!

I have found the best way to remove poop from anywhere ... walk through barefoot! Sorry ... couldn't resist since I stepped in chickie poo a few days in my socks. How they poo'd outside the cage in the basement I'll never know.

Seriously I was thinking about one of those leaf rakes for the run when its done (ohhh I rhymed

). Raking might be fun! In the sun! Okay ... I'll stop now! Guess I'm all done!

I need to go pet chickens. They make me sane! LOL

Here's a picture of the little shrub rake several people have mentioned. I use it and it works great. I also have goats with my chickens and it is the only rake small enough to also be great at raking up their poo. I rake it into the large dog pooper scooper sitting there, pour it into five gallon buckets and then carry them to my compost pile.

We haven't had to scoop any poop. We move their run every week and also let them out into the yard in the mornings and in the evenings.
Once every few weeks I open up their coop and take their roosts out to hose off and then I powder them down with DE. Other than that I just change the litter when it gets awful (which is getting close) my compost heap will be happy.

I throw mine in my compost and this winter I will create a new compost site so in the spring I will turn it over with some soil and it will be ready for herbs and veggies.

My girls are on woodchips and I use a rake and slitted spoon to pick up poop aka droppings.

Some time back I called the Cooperative Extension. They advise to do a deep bedding of shavings and DON'T scoop poo- just let the chickens churn it into the bedding. Beneficial microbes break the droppings down within the bedding- it's basically dry composted where it is. Then every six months, remove all of the bedding (I use a big shovel

) and start over again with fresh. This method works REALLY well with our small flock! It's never dusty, wet, or smelly in thier coop and the litter acually looks clean all the time.

Here's a random pic I found that shows what the bedding looks like. I believe this was end of this past winter, when the bedding was almost due to be changed. (We bank the north wall of the outside area of their coop with hay bales in the winter so they can still go outside but be protected from the bitter winds and driving snow.)
