It was pretty much all yolk. No blood or crazy stuff in the yolk...just bright yellow as usual

could be she lost an ovary..most likely from infection..

might be a good idea to give antibiotic..Amoxicillin is an option::

you might be able to get small amount cheaper from a vet or other source...there are other options a vet might suggest..
most likely she won't be laying any more eggs..
(unless this is the "dead" ovary..hens are born with 2 ovaries, but one "dies" leaving only the working one)

best to give this girl some extra protein..(boiled eggs, etc..)
some Poly-vi-sol liquid baby vitamins..no iron..3 drops on beak once a day for a week..then taper off for another week.
keep in warm safe place..and give TLC..

you can make up this mix..
this is for 1 day..divide into 3 feeds for the day..give for 5 days..
along with regular feed..

1 cooked egg yolk
small drizzle of honey and/or baby applesauce or unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
2-4 tablespoons baby oatmeal cereal or cooked regular oatmeal
make mix puffy..not soupy or gummy..add layer feed if necessary.


has the hen been wormed?
describe the droppings..color and consistency.

if you opt to take her to a vet..or get meds from a vet..(preferably an avian vet or vet college)
take the sample "egg" for lab tests, just in case it's something else..

It's the first time I've seen this, does anyone who's dealt with an internal layer recognize it? I know there was an autopsy posted a week or 2 ago....

Sammi's thoughts are sound, but you also may want to ask yourself how attached you are to this bird.

describe the hen's droppings..color and consistency..

color of comb..(is it pale? are the legs pale?)
is the comb hot or cold?
hot under the wings?
does she appear cold? (huddled up)
(looking for fever)

ever been wormed?
treated for cocci?
any odd droppings in the area?

Everything else seems normal...good behavior, alert, etc. My wife said there was a bloody poop today, but beyond that everything else has been normal

She had a sour crop a couple of weeks ago, but we flipped her upside down and gave her some applesauce. All seemed well since then.

she could have :
worms..has she been wormed?
cocci
or internal bleeding from infection/other condition..

could you take a fecal sample to a vet for testing?(worms and cocci)
also the "egg"..

penicillin is also an option..
Pen-G procaine available at farm/feed store usually in the frig.

if cocci..liquid Sulmet 12.5%

chickens don't act sick till very ill.

and please don't turn a chicken upside down.

Huh. The "Living with Chickens" book talks about grabbing birds by their feet to inspect them.

What is the issue with hanging them by their feet?
