Wolves On My Property!

As I read it, the OP wasn't having a problem yet. She just thought she might because the wolves were seen there. If I were her, I would get an LGD and invest in an electric fence. But that's me. Just a comment. Your friend's dogs were killed on the wolf's territory. Might have been a different story if the dogs were on their own turf. Just sayin'.

There weren't even supposed to BE wolves in the area he was hunting... but that's another story of more government lies. Just 50 or so years ago you never would have heard of this sort of thing. Wolves are different now.

What about people having dogs taken right off porches and dog lots? That certainly isn't in the wolves territory.

If the wolves were there on her property, she will have a problem if they were wolves.

Very interesting back and forth here.

I think I am going to side with the dude who live in Alaska. You're not going to find more "wolfy" territory than that! By the way, I have a hard time believing any dog could begin to discourage even a small pack of wolves. Timber Wolves are huge and have much larger canines and larger more robust molars for crushing bone. They also have better endurance and stronger bite force than most if not all domestic dogs. Lets not forget that they travel in packs and as I recall the initial post said that there were two or three of them outside the coop. A small pack of wolves would make a nice appitizer out of any domesticated dog who ran out to protect the girls. Just my two cents...

Trust in good fencing backed up by a VERY powerful hot wire. Good luck to you...I'm glad that most of my predators are coons, coyote's and hawks. I would hate to deal with predators who could put me on the menue as I go out to feed the girls!

But.. i cant help but feel bad for the shot wolf.... WHy did they shoot if it wasnt a kill shot?
Now its going to suffer.. and that really bugs me.

They should have tracked that dog and put it out of its misery...

ETA: I just wanted to say that i have no problem with killing predators or hunting... but i do have a problem with someone taking shots and not tracking the animal to finish it off.....

LOL I'm sorry...I just couldn't resist!!! Good luck...I hope the chicken and sheep fair well!!!

Is there any way you can increase the height of your fence so that a wolf or coyote won't be able to jump it? Maybe hot wire near the bottom to keep them from digging? I have never been in this situation, so it is hard to provide experienced advice to you.

So where are wolves in the lower 48 located?

Obviously, Wyoming, Montana, northern & eastern Idaho, around Yellowstone.

I've also heard that they have been reintroduced into Utah, Colorado, eastern Arizona and New Mexico?

How about N&S Dakota, Washington, Oregon or CA?

Can anyone confirm any of the other states not surrounding Yellowstone?

Friends have said definitely in Oregon. The problem is that they so badly screwed up the reintroduction that they now don't know what to do about it. They tried to introduce a hunting season for wolves in one state (I can't remember which one) but then another state couldn't do it for some reason or another, so they ended up stopping it everywhere.

Don't get me wrong, I love wolves in all their beauty and everything good that goes with them. However, I am smart enough to realize the damage they can do and how efficient a predator they are. They will kill and eat anything they can get their teeth on - ANYTHING - don't let the wolfaboos try and sway you. Talk to people that KNOW about wolves, yet still understand and respect them for what they are.

What stopped the wolf hunts is the wolf plan Wyoming passed about listing the wolf as a predator and can be shot on sight across Wyoming.
A judge just ruled that even though MT and ID had done as the feds wanted and the wolf numbers are over 500 there will be no hunts.

Son came running in the other night, he saw some wolves out in our pasture. He knows the difference between a coyote and a wolf. This evening I found some scat in our pasture near the gate left by a canine with hair in it. The hair looks like the hair on our cows. Going out to do a count tomorrow.

Hope nothing is missing.

My advice to the OP is build a very sturdy run with hot wire around and on top of it. SSS.
