But.. i cant help but feel bad for the shot wolf.... WHy did they shoot if it wasnt a kill shot?
Now its going to suffer.. and that really bugs me.

They should have tracked that dog and put it out of its misery...

ETA: I just wanted to say that i have no problem with killing predators or hunting... but i do have a problem with someone taking shots and not tracking the animal to finish it off.....

Well said...I think everyone on this site would agree with you on this point. (least I sure hope they would!)

Oh yes, the big bad wolf & the big bad "stupid" government...geez...& it was WY very STUBBORN approach to the whole Wolf Control Program, that halted the hunt & not the Judge...the judges hands were tied by LAW! & for those of you adovcatin' lawlessness, should be completely ashamed...the SSS (Shot the wolf, Shovel the wolf into a hole & cover it, & Shut up & don't tell anyone, hence the SSS) is WRONG!

Likewise, the wild game populations AREN'T being "decimated" they've scattered, (as they should, didn't have any real preds to worry 'bout 'ceptn man & some bears...) for a LONG time...& rightly so they've scattered, & there was a major push in the '90s to regulate elk herds to lower numbers, so they opened up cow elk season, & along with harsh winters, killed off more than they expected...so much so that hunters can't get at 'em as easily as they used to, so guess who gets the blame, THE BIG BAD WOLF!

I can just shake my head at all the misinformation that's posted in this thread...Canis lupis is Canis Lupis...don't matter ifin' it's a "Timber" wolf, or a "Grey" Canadian...they BOTH Canis Lupis! For far too long have the elk had pretty much free range...& boy did the hunters like that! & here come some wolves, that give the hunter some competition, & along with a WHOLE Ranching industry, & BOOM! You got yer self a HUGE ANTI WOLF Campaign...

(OBTW, I live in Alaska, too, & not some suburb of Anchorage, like the Mat Valley, but out in the BOONDOCKS of Alaska)

Um I don't live in a suburb either. And in Alaska, they don't call it BOONDOCKS. And the Mat Valley isn't a suburb, it's a borough - and a HUGE one at that. There's a LOT of 'boondocks' in the valley. Just what do you consider 'boondocks' and how long have you lived here?

Yes, they are all Canis lupus (spelling right would help). But the Alaskan and Canadian wolves are a MUCH larger version of the wolves that used to be in the lower 48 year ago.

I'm not against wolves (check my HANDLE), I'm against humans screwing things up, just as they have. Last time I checked that WAS the government AND Wyoming. They haven't scattered, they have been wiped out, I know a LOT of people in those various states and there is NO GAME to be found. Kinda like the MOOSE in certain areas here? Or is it more important to you for ALL the wolves to live, rather than some of us that NEED to hunt to be able to get game?

You're showing your wolfaboo there.

PS: I don't agree with SSS either. I agree with protection of my property however.

LGD = Livestock Guardian Dog

That is a yes to them being in WA state. And it doesn't make my hubby too happy. Two years ago he ran into a pack while hunting for deer.

Ok I stated boondocks as the L48's that read this, probably aren't familiar with the term "bush", like you & I are...(L. Yukon, to be exact...where there's plenty o' moose, bear & wolves to be had...)& 'twas humans, who messed it up in the first place...with the decimation of the wolf population in Large Part of the L. 48...& Size matters not...& no the elk populations aren't bein' decimated by the wolf population nor are the moose herds in Alaska...(how is is that for centuries wolves & wild game populations could flourish...& yet when man steps into the picture it's the wolf that has to go???)...I've read a great deal of the studies of the MT F&G studies that suggest that the game populations have been affected by the reintroduction, but not to the hyperbolic heights that the anti wolfer & ranchers have portrayed the effect (blown waaay outta proportion!). & Just like the moose population in the interior...harsh winters were to blame for the moose numbers decreasing, over the fact that it was wolves that had done them in....The Truth is Out There!

(ps. been out here 5 years)

The Lower Yukon is a big place. And I don't change my lingo for outsiders

Is there plenty? Maybe you've been lucky - I know personally people in McGrath and Bethel that aren't having a real good time of getting meat for the families, yet the wolves are thriving.

I think you take me wrong, I am not against wolves. They are my 2nd love, but because we have messed it up so badly, we have to have proper game management. Yes, the truth is out there, but it's only partly what you say. Wolves play a LARGE part in the herds everywhere, it takes a LOT of meat to sustain a big dog, and when they run in packs... that's even more.

I suppose you think a wolf only kills the weak, the young and what it needs?

Mountain Village by chance? I have a VERY good friend there.
