i didnt read all the new posts but ive heard she was grabed and taken underwater by the whale from the platform

I JUST heard about this, and I think it's so sad. I used to want to be a killer whale trainer when I was little, I was obsessed! But when my parents took me to Seaworld and I saw these huge beautiful animals in a tank it was so sad. I mean, come on, to move these whales to Florida and put them in tanks and not expect them to go a little stir crazy? I don't think it was the whales fault at all, even if he physically killed the trainer, I don't think he's guilty. The trainer knew the risks and she loved the animals she worked with, and she wouldn't want this whale euthanized, but one of the comments replying to the news article I read was ignorant people saying things like "He's already killed once before, he needs to be euthanized before it happens again."

...okay, so we, human beings, take this creature from the WILD, from its family and life, put it in a tank, make it do tricks, and then when it decides to have a little fun it's time to kill it?? I just don't get how people can think like that...

Ugh, that's the most frustrating part for me... I mean, accidents happen, whether it was truly the cause of the whale or the trainer, but things like that happen all the time. Sharks kill humans (and I know frequently the humans go and kill the sharks, to return the favor) and bears kill humans and blahblah and that's dangerous, but to put an animal in a tank... and then get mad when it kills someone? Ughhhh. I hate humans so much sometimes.

BTW, Orcas are NOT considered an endangered species, therefore there is no reason to breed them in captivity for anything other than profit. If they need to be rehabbed, sure, but to turn around and train them as puppets... blah. Sorry about the rant, this subject just gets me so fired up.

I hear ya!
The Killer Whale has declined in overall numbers due to the environment and human actions. Right now they aren’t considered to be an endangered species, but that doesn’t mean effective conservation efforts aren’t necessary. This is especially true in certain habitat locations where the numbers are decreasing very rapidly. Research has shown some Killer Whales are threatened by the loss of their natural habitat as well as a reduction in food supply in some areas.

When we're out fishing, we see plenty of dolphins and have even caught a few sharks - smaller species (also let go no worse for the wear). Dolphins can and will BITE LOL I've never been bitten by one, but I've heard other folks talk about being bitten by them while trying to feed them.

They're wild creatures.

It's a shame the lady was killed. I'm really sorry for that. I think it was probably an accident, certainly no one could see the whale would do what he did.

This was stated a while back but I wanted to address it.

Even Roy Horn has stated that he was NOT attacked by his tiger; something triggered the tiger to try and protect him. If you analyze the bite, the tiger was not trying to kill him but drag him to safety. Of course there was massive damage done since human skin is not designed for this kind of treatment. I would wager that Roy was in the process of having a stroke without his knowledge but the tiger was aware......
And if that tiger wanted him dead he would have been ripped to shreds, nothing would have stopped him.

I do agree these whales are abused and should be released. I will not go to these parks for this very reason, I would rather observe these amazing creatures in the wild.
