Women coop builders

Great job to all the ladies out there building the coops. My husband started our coop because he's the one with the tools and carpentry skills. He does work 6 days a week, so I am wondering when this will get finished. Our chicks are three weeks old now. My boys and I have been running around picking up supplies we need and even a few building supplies for the hubby. My husband does not mind building the coop, it was his idea originally to even get chickens. We just need to kick it into high gear. Again, ladies you're doing terrific work!

The whole thing is on both landscape timbers and a 2' thick concrete pad (it came with the house!). The landscaping timbers serve a couple of purposes- first, they give me something to anchor the run walls to, without drilling into the concrete. Second- they create a 6" deep "pan" to keep the litter from falling out!

VERY nice!! Well, honestly you just did an amazing job. I sure hope mine turns out cute, too! I know nothing about building, so I'm trying to do my best to fake it! LOL! In the meantime, I really am learning an awful lot about tools and building!

Here's a small one I built. It's been here a while but I am just putting the roof on it today, along with the door framing.

I don't know if this counts but we just slung this together last night after buying a calf for $5 at the auction(no one wanted him

i just finished putting the roof on mine today too
had tarps up there for several months

ended up with two roofs, first a roll asphalt product with adhesive backing
then i put on corrugated metal over the top of that
the belt and suspenders approach....

I designed and built most of our coop - my DH insisted on doing the framing and roofing himself. I could and would have done it alone - but since the weather was 100F I let him help me do it. The only truly difficult portion that really I didn't want to do by myself was the hanging of the doors as it was too hard to lift and put on the hinges at the same time. But even that could have been accomplished with some ingenuity by bracing the door first with a nailed in 2x4.

Yes, you can do all the work yourself - it will take longer with just one person and require some flexibility in the process. It will depend on the size of your coop as to how difficult a job it will be to do it by yourself. It will help if you use power tools. I'm not afraid of using power tools and use just about every one we have. But the ones I don't know how to use I just avoid and use a substitute instead

Here's our 5x10 coop that took 1 month (from July 12th to August 13th) to almost finish.

I love seeing all these coops. I did start out by myself but now my husband and my dad have been doing most of the work. I framed everything and we got it in place, I built the roosts and painted but had to slow down due to getting really big, really quick and a few pregnancy complications. We also had to take a break to work on the goat barn since our cute little boys came to live with us sooner than we planned. They just started back on our coop and run and it should be finished next weekend. I will say this project definitely boosted my building skills and I know I can build things myself now. I'll just have to wait until after this baby get's here when my health is a little better.

I love building! It's my new therapy.....the only thing is, it gives me more coops to fill which isn't always a good thing!
