Women, How To Handle A Compliment

Quote:
That's funny - I do the same thing. Old people are so used to being treated as if they didn't exist. They smile so nicely in return, it makes my day.

Except the old crotchety ones that continue right on grumbling. Then it is a game. Make the old person laugh.

I felt great when I went to Steven's basic training graduation and someone congratulated me on my brother's graduation! Then a couple of people thought that the soldier in the pic must be my husband! I like to think I look younger rather than my at the time 17 year old son looked older!! LOL I know a lot of people are just being really nice when they say that,, but it sure feels good!!!

Great thread, Deb1!

About a year ago I decided to change my outlook on life and started trying to live a grateful lifestyle. Part of that shift was to start complimenting people, even people I don't know. I tend to be pretty quiet and reserved, so it was a leap to talk to strangers. I have to say, it has been great fun! People are startled and then get this funny little smile. I remember one man in particular. He was an older man and had a head full of gorgeous white hair. As he walked by I said "I love your hair." He looked shocked and mumbled a "ummm... thank you?". Later in the evening (we were at a play), he walked back by me, beamed a huge smile and said "I like your hair too". He was so pleased with himself and so delighted at the compliment. It was a happy, happy little moment and such a simple thing to do. That's the fun in it. A simple, honest compliment can totally change some one's day for the better. I have also learned that it keeps me from focusing inward and causes me to look out. It's harder to be self-conscious or self-depreciating if you aren't looking inward.

I've read a lot of your posts. I've found them to be smart, sensitive, and enjoyable to read.
The guy in the lumber yard was an idiot.

Oh, when I have dinner with my Mom the waiter/waitress will usually think she's my date.

I bet your mom is a beautiful woman. but can you imagine a 30 year old and someone thinks a 32 year old is her son. And no dh does not look that young. I was floored
Oh and thank you for the compliment on my posts.

As a couple of others have posted, my favorite people to compliment are the older folks. Giving a sincere compliment to an elderly person and seeing the response just warms my heart and has lead to some great conversations and friendships.

You BYCers are wonderful!

Me too. CityGirl and I have stuff in common I see. I have to really bat myself sometimes when I realize I'm spending too much time studying my belly button lint!

Debi, you just gave us an example of how NOT to do it. For shame. And I say it's more Phyllis Diller than Joplin...
