Women in the military

Don't get me started with women going to West Point!

My daughter is military for almost 20 years now. She has and can be deployed at anytime all over the world. She would give her life for her country so if she wanted combat I would not try to talk her out of it. We as her parents were made wards of her son if anything ever happened. She now works in the Join Chief of Staff office at the Pentagon. I believe in equal rights for the women and men of military background. I think women would endure horrible dangers in captivity at the wrong hands but so do men.

God bless the men and women in uniform, I know I do everyday for the freedoms they give me.

This is 2011, and the idea that women should be protected and not allowed to hold a job of which they are capable and meet the physical requirements is beyond ludicrous. Speaking as a retired Air Force officer, I am apalled that anyone in this day and age would disagree.

Certain military jobs require certain physical characteristics; for example, to pilot a plane, one must be at least a certain height, but not over a certain height. There are also sitting height requirements as well as weight requirements. Basically you have to be able to fit into the cockpit in a manner that will allow you to control the plane. I would imagine that there are similar requirements for tanks, and other jobs that are done in tight spaces. Some jobs require strength, and those needs must be met. Likewise some jobs require excellent (uncorrected) vision or hearing. But anyone who can fulfill the requirements of a job should be able to compete for it on an equal footing.

Any citizen who wants to contribute to their country, who is physically and mentally able to do so, should be allowed to.

Whether that is the military, politics, police, fire, rescue... so long as you can do the job what you've got dangling (or not) between your legs shouldn't matter.

I think that Navy psych studies have actually shown that all female submarine crews are more mentally capable of handling the challenges of that particular duty. I haven't been able to find the research, but if it is true...is the implication that only women should be allowed submarine duty?

There have also been studies that show women would make better fighter pilots

I think women in the military is fine.Support roles more so than combat, but if a woman accepts the risks of capture then that is her choice.Sexual issues and menstration I am sure are dealt with,so again if women want too let them.

X 2!!!!
As a woman who has a Pilots license and was a former flight attendant... I agree with this 100%. My flight instructor, check ride examiner, and many male pilots that I have met have often agreed that well trained female pilots can be more competent than well trained male classmates. The reason? Simply put, most women don't feel the need to continuosly show off... don't get overly full of themselves every time they do something well... more often have smoother hands on yoke and throttle... and pay better attention to instruction.

No offense, boys

As a flight attendant in a regional airline, I noticed there is a very large crop of female pilots coming up in the ranks, and I only imagine it will get larger. If only it were the same for the military, I would have joined up years ago.
