Trust me those cats will be put in their place immediately. We even had wild cats around and I was worried but the chickens won't tolerate them! It is funny to see cats afraid of chickens. I wouldn't risk chicks but grown chickens will go after the cats if they are bothering them.
If you feed the cats too, there should be no problems, I have not seen my cat or any other cat go after any of my birds, I think if a stray came along, and you had small enough chickens there might be a problem if it was looking for a meal. Then again if the chickens are loose, and something else comes along looking for a meal there could be a problem. I wouldnt worry about your own cats, but would worry about the OTHER things out there while freeranging.
My chickens don't free range. However, my run is not covered and there is always a cat or 5(!) that decide to climb in with my girls. All is fine unless one of the cats decide the treats that I put in there are for everyone! The chickens do not tolerate free loaders and will immeadiatly let them know that! We have a cat named Daisy that we call our coop kitty! She lives in the coop. She is the first one out the pop door every morning. Then she goes to the people door and waits for me to let her back in to be fed! She has her own nesting box in which she sleeps every night and her food dish is also there. During the day she is in and out, then at night she waits for me to call her and she comes running into the coop! She knows she gets fed again at bed time! I have found her curled up on a couple of eggs now and then... maybe she is hanging out with the chickens too much!!
My cat will chase the chicks because they run and move alot. HOWEVER, one of my hens pecked him in the nose so now he knows better than to mess with the adult birds.
The cat tried stalking my girls early on, but they rushed him, and he's not used to birds fighting back. Now they have a healthy respect for each other! But my girls weren't babies either, mind you...
well my cats come to the house if they are hungry and then my father goes and feeds them.but my chickens are about 100 feet away. my cats love me and some have seen the chickens from a distance of about 10 feet but that is close enough and i pick it up and put it somewhere else. But i dont know if they will like my chickens!???
my big cats run away from my chickens. but my little rotten kitten killed one of my hatchlings i had in the basement. (long story) but only stalks the big ones in the yard. i think they could kick his butt if needed. cats no problem, dogs different story.
