So about a month ago i got this brownish with chipmunk pattern chick from a feed store that was labeld as a blue laced red wyandotte. And im wondering if all BLRW (blue laced red wyandottes for short) start out black with yellowish patterns in there first month

From my limited experience and research, BLRW don’t breed true.

As a result, the lacing and color isn’t uniform. So some will be closer to black coloring than the steel blue and some will be closer to white-ish.

My youngest ones (In the pot with 2 sapphire splash friends), Merida and Alita, are about 3.5 months now and have dark lacing.

My older pair, Red and Scarlet, are 6 months and have very light pale lacing. Your lighter blrw is technically splash laced, not uncommon when breeder blrw, the babies can split to splash. :] they are so pretty

It looks right.. RLBW is challenging to breed.. but it does breed true.. as true as any blue will breed.. with 50% being blue and 25% each splash and black.. approximately. Not breeding true is less than 50%. Also the blue shade can vary from very dark almost black to much lighter smokey grey.

From hatchery.. you can get either black, blue, or splash laced red.. most hatcheries DON'T guarantee which you will get. :hmm

The red verses gold.. is another challenging aspect of RLBW.. too light equals gold.. And being an avid breeder and hatcher of chickens.. what I can assure you is that even though I keep only birds that meet the SOP.. only 1-3% of chicks that hatch will be true breeding/show quality.. But all should be fantastic eye candy! :love
