The main downside is that the source is not constant. Solar is guaranteed to be out of service 1/2 of the year, [nighttime], plus during cloudy weather. Wind is erratic, at best, and unless you can get 100' above the treetops, anywhere, it's useless. Then, there's the cost of battery storage, or a second source of power, if you are off the grid.

Remember the NIMBY's [Not in my backyard] in Mass. They didn't want their ocean view messed up with windmills, which had a constant source of wind.

Nuclear is the way to go. Once it's established, it's cheap, effecient, and is already a proven technology, but again, we have the NIMBY's who worry about growing a second head, due to radiation exposure.

Steve, I understand what you are saying, but we have to look at it based on what we know at the time. Hindsite is fabulous.

Situation:

The leader of a country that has been friendly to the US is assassinated by religious fanatics, mainly because he recently signed a peace treaty with Isreal. He is not an especially nice guy and is actually pretty ruthless in putting down opposition. He was assassinated so maybe not ruthless enough? Open for discussion. I grant that he is probably one of these "president-for-life" types that seem to predominate in many countries around the third world. The country is a regional military power.

The constitutional successor to the assasinated president is also not an especially nice guy and is likely another "president-for-life". He is agreeable to continuing to a very large degree the policies of his assasinated predecesor which fit the US's agenda much more than the religious fanatics' announced policies. He could very much use some backing from the US to solidify his position.

This is about the time of the Iranian hostage situation, switching over from Carter to Reagan. Iran and religious fanatics are very much on everyone's mind.

Hiow do you propose we proceed?

It sucks, but as long as that's where a big chunk of oil is that we can buy, it will be just like it is now. This country will fail completely if we don't have enough oil. There isn't the political will to do what needs to be done to reduce our consumption. The only solution given is to drill more and pass the blame. Then when they do open up all the prohibited areas they will show that it isn't enough and will blame the current situation as the cause. America is like a big spoiled brat. We've shown it in the past 30 years and we continue to show it.

How do we proceed? Who knows? We will proceed to do whatever is best either for the country or for the corporations. Can anyone tell the difference?

I have just one suggestion: Look up " The Georgia Guide Stones" on the internet. These people that were responsible for their construction have had one thing on their mind for hundreds of years. Total control of the world. That will shock almost everyone who reads this, so all I ask is start with the guide stones & hopefully that will lead you to investigate further into what is really happening to us all. Our destruction is almost here.

Agree with you on everything but nuclear being cheap. The initial start up is very expensive and when interest is included on the cost it actually raises the cost over coal or oil fired substantially. I sure do agree it's the way to go. We could bury the used rods in Az along the border. It would be a fence of sorts.
