Jeremy, a person has to start somewhere! My gosh, buddy, there won't be a rooster left alive after you get done.

(I know you can take teasing) That rooster has a great bottom line, and that is hard to get. Some of those faults can be bred out in a generation or two.

I have the standard here but cant remember what the tail angle for delewares is? I have an australorp hen so darned good bu tail angle is a bit higher than should be. not by any means squirrl tailed but just higher than it should be..Shes super nice otherwise, perfect straight comb 5 points nice shape and wide... My freind is always trying to give me some dels but I really want to concentrate on what I already have going on. Its going to be a long haul for me trying to get my breed together with good birds but Im determined ...IM thinking about when I get settleed with the australorps, I might get a few birds from him. Hes pretty pickey about his birds...Ive learned a lot about them from him...Hes done pretty well with them..I think they came from EBD? heritage farm. I cant remember , I know he just frove to new jerseey this spring to pick up 6 pullets to keep fresh genes he said he was ready for outcross, but I dont know a lot about the woman he bought them from except shes a heritage brred farm. Im just not set up to run 2 breeds right now..I think he wants me to get attached when we use my broody hens to help hastch out his dels.. But Im a determined one..I dont let myself get attached to them cute as they are. Maybe in a couple years.

I sure do, they are my absolute favorites. I should have hatching eggs available next spring if all goes as planned, small quantities due to me needing to increase the numbers of my flock after culling.

Well you'll be hard pressed to find a picture of a real SQ Delaware anywhere. They are so few and far inbetween most folks think that they may even be extinct. The stock has been diluted with so much outside influence that good, quality Delaware blood is hard to come by. I began searching for good Dels last year and have started to gather birds from different lines to establish my breeding flock. I've found several sources this year that seem to have spectacular Delawares so I plan on ordering from them next spring to out cross different stock to my birds to further establish bio diversity.

That said, yes, I can show you pictures of my birds. However I don't want to hijack this thread by posting multiples, so PM me.

Sometimes I might be a little critical, I find myself looking at Stewart with a critical eye all the time. Is he typey enough? Is his color even enough? Will he pass on this or that trait to his offspring, etc, etc. I guess that's just the perfectionist in me talking.

...they are SO COMPLICATED! You'd think a black and white chook would be simple eh?

You just started breeding Del's not too long ago if I recall. You got a jump on some good stock with Speckledhen's line. Your birds WILL look better than mine! If I had your birds bloodlines I might not use this boy either, but...well I don't, so I likely will. I think I have some decent ones to work with but a long way from perfection. WORK WORK WORK...LOL! Another year or so with some outcross blood and I'll be good

I'm just trying to preserve/improve the good traits these babies have. We could always use more good Del lines. Good to see you are so passionate about working on them as well!!!

Start with the right stock and you won't have to do excessive culling due to bad genetics. Just because you (not specifically you, but folks who practice this in general) hatch hundreds upon literal hundreds of chicks each year doesn't necessarily make you better than the next breeder. Having lots of birds doesn't mean squat. I feel like that's the problem with a lot of folks out there calling themselves "breeders" nowadays- they get their hands on something "rare" and run with it, mass producing and selling eggs/chicks to the followers before they've done their homework and really taken the time to establish their own flocks. I've done my research on this breed. I've hatched chicks from different sources, seen their faults, learned from those mistakes and continued to moved forward in a progressive manner. As I will continue to do so with the future of my program.

Yes I'm a young breeder but that doesn't dis merit my birds or my eye.
