well I went to the grocery store today and as we were walking through the produce/deli section (sampling everything they had to offer...I spotted an employee in produce emptying the bag that people with shuck corn over and throw the husks and such away. well I went over to him and asked him (as I had my chickens in the back of my mind, looking at the bag full of husks) what did they do with that? he replied, "well we normally just toss it out in the trash". I said, "my chickens would LOVE that, is there anyway I would take it off your hands?" he said "sure!! no problem!" so Hubs gets a cart and takes the large trash bag full of produce waste to the car. we get home and he goes through it. lots of husks of course, but also quite a few ears in there as well, guess some people dropped them on accident. then he found a few potatoes that were nearly past their prime, so those went to the compost along with some onions as well. then he came across some small hot peppers, looked like Habeneros to me. they had some bad spots on them so I opened them up and took the seeds out to dry them and I can grow my own from them. they were a pretty light fleshy orange color, hope I can make it happen. this was very interesting and I am going to start talking to the produce manager to see when they start to throw things out, because i have seen them throw stuff out that was dented or what not...and would have been perfectly fine for the girls. can't hurt to find out if I can get free chicken food/treats!! just thought I would share my find with others. there's no sense in letting perfectly good stuff like that go to waste in a dupster, when the girls can go crazy for it!!

I asked my grocery store if I could have the "old" veggies/fruits and they told me I had to talk to customer service and fill out a liability form so I couldn't sue them if I ate the rotten veggies.

The things you have to do b/c of all the sue happy people in the world today...

I tried this a few months ago. Three different stores, and all said they can't because of liability issues. Walmart said NO WAY< NO HOW! Ughhh! Sue happy people ruin it yet again!

What's so weird is that a few years ago the local store WOULD give me the apples/pears for my horses! Guess either they got a memo from their lawyer to be ready for a lawsuit, or else got wind of Walmart's policy.

The groceries around here can't give me their scraps any more but the farmers market vendors are happy to get rid of corn husks, beet tops, all sorts of stuff goes home with me.

I usually take a few big trash bags with me when I go so they don't have to give up their boxes or anything.

Doesn't it just chap your hide to see all that lovely compostable chicken food go to waste? Maybe it's not really wasted if the rats at the dump get it!

The Whole Foods Market in our area seems to be pretty user friendly in giving us some scraps from the produce department. But every other grocery store we've asked have all said no.

Years ago, back in the 1970's, I had goats and chickens and my local market was only too happy to give me boxes of their waste produce.

Times have really changed.

Oh but tonight I tried my 6 week old girls on some plain yoghurt and once they discovered it they loved it!

I used to go to a local privately owned sandwich shop each evening at closing and pick up all that stuff that gets raked off the board after they make the sandwich. I would get a huge bag of everything you can ever imagine to put on a sandwich (tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, bean sprouts, peppers, meat ends, cheese ends, leftover bread) the list goes on and on. You might just think about making nice with some of the local shop owners. They are usually a lot easier to get scraps out of than the grocery stores but it never hurts to ask.

Congrats on your new treat find.
