Yeah I would just go with started pairs. Ours are laying, but I want to let the mother's hatch them. Do you think I should take the ducklings and brood them myself or let the mother do it? I always brooded, with luck she'll lay again for you too that way. Left on their own to be parent raised they have a50/50 shot, in a brooder, they are all fine unless you screw up something, much safer I feel.

Started birds can be found with ease for reasonable prices, $40-$50 on woodies, $40-$60 on mandarins, personally I would never pay over $40 on woodies and $45-$50 on mandarins, said that in another thread, and started a war, but it's true, that's what they are worth, the 60-80 range often seen on websites and auctions is just crazy, those two species are a dime a dozen. Contact me and I'll give you some leads too if interested. Right now, it's just a waiting game as most of last years birds are sold out and it'll be this fall before most breeders start to ship '10 pairs

LOL, 20 bucks is about out of my price range at the moment! I am trying to sell feeder insects and eggs to get some money saved back, but who knows, lol.

Well if you don't have much money right now, I would probably hold off on the more exotic ducks. There is more money that goes into it then you think. The feed, water bill, aviary wood, aviary netting, the ducks, etc.

I already maintain a relatively large flock at the moment, and have most materials free at my disposal.
Also, WD's aren't exotic - they are completely native

As for "not really allowed to have duck".............if your local town ordinance prohibits owning/keeping poultry, I would image you are out of luck. Somewhere along the way a neighbor is gonna let it be known. Also, the permit does state that a DEC official could come and check that you are complying with the requirements.
