If it were a state DNR band you could find out but a White Mandarin or White Wood duck that has a leg band would most definitely be a captive bred bird and the band would be for the owners breeding identification, usually not who owned the bird.

It is a year old Mandarin drake.

Both the Wood duck and GW Teal are a migratory bird and you should obtain a FWS form 3-186 from the seller. The Mandarin drake is not a migratory bird and does not require a special permit unless your town has some local ordinance regarding animals. As for game, I believe the Wood duck and Green-winged Teal are in the top three as the most hunted waterfowl in the U.S.

Easy keepers, probobly a good starter duck for those wanting to get into the wild waterfowl but of course they are not easily tamed like domestic ducks and you would need some type of covered pen/aviary or they would be gone in a minute. They are cold hardy you just need to provide a place to get out of the wind if they choose.

Thanks, I enjoy taking pictures of them.

You don't have to pay for a permit to buy a Wood duck. The seller must hold a current FWS Migratory sale and disposal permit. The seller will give you a form (FWS form 3-186) that you will keep and shows that you purchased the bird legally, without this form you are up a creek if you have a migratory bird in your possession........Now if you plan on raising them to sell or whatever, you must purchase a FWS Migratory sale and disposal permit (federal) and depending on the state you live in you might also have to purchase some type of state permit. If I remember correctly the federal permit runs $75 for 5 years.

Oh yes. My Mandarins were wild when I got them. Then one day one of my males, I had 2 pairs, hopped out of the pen, and ran off. They are getting tamer. Hopefully they will lay this spring, as they didnt lay their first year. Are they hard to hatch? Im planning to hatch lots of ducklings. lol

The Mandarin & Wood duck hens are excellent mothers, I always let her hatch them rather then putting them in an incubator. Just make sure you have a couple of nest box choices for them. (ramp if your birds are pinioned). Also, she will lead them to the food source and care for them on cold nights without a problem.
