Wood Pellets for bedding?

I use the horse stall pellets in my coop mixed with sawdust, stall dry and aspin shavings.

In my banty brooder, I'm using straight pellets. LOVE THEM.

I've heard that the wood stove pellets can have additives and are made out of hardwoods.

I am using wood pellets in my brooder in the basement..

It has been 6 days, no deaths, happy healthy chicks..

I got mine from the local hardware store.

100% Pure wood, no additives.

No smell in the basement besides the wood smell, and even that is barely noticable now as I hooked up an exhaust fan to an extra vent and have it kick on for 10 minutes every hour.

I think i'm going to get the pellets wet like you'd do for a horse and use them in my coop. I use them at a farm i work at for alpacas. i don't think it should be any problem, and they don't stick to feathers like sawdust. Great for silkies.

Wood pellets make good bedding. You can moisten them and they'll fluff up or leave them dry. Very useful.

I would like to use wood chips from chipper. Have been unsuccessful at getting them so far. Someone else with dump spot close to road always beats me out when line crews are working in area. If you can get them, they are free as the crew likes to find a convenient place to dump them. You will get 10 15 yds at a time too.

So I use grass clippings from our yard. We mow around 5 acres so we never run out. I will use leaves, wild honeysuckle and straw in wintertime. I keep litter 6" deep in coop. I like grass since it smells good and is free. Chooks dive in and eat some of it when it first gets dumped in coop. They still have grass in their run tho, but thinning out now that winter almost here.

If I could get the free chips I used to get, would use those and then recycle to garden. No way I am putting grass clippings in garden for mulch tho. Enough work as it is to keep it weed free without seeding more in! Still, am grateful to have free mulch, even if it is not my first choice. May build and use poop planks for wintertime. Easier to keep odor down that way as fresh litter more scarce in wintertime. Can always dump poop onto garden all winter and let rain and time do it's work.

I have been using our wood pellets for the pellet stove since my 6 chicks were 2 weeks old. I tried this because one of the bags of pellets became wet, and I asked hubby to give them to me, rather than toss the bag, so I could try for bedding. The chicks are 3 and 4 weeks old now. I have had no problems with them and they are working out way better than paper towels, straw or wood shavings! I have them in a dog crate here in the house. If the pellets get wet from their water, it's no big deal. They swell up and then dry into "sawdust".

As the pellets crumble a little.. the babies take "dust baths" in them. I have had to change them once so far due to odor. But I figure once in that time is far better than every 3rd day or so if it were shavings.
