wood shavings in brooder

I have used pine shavings from the very beginning without having any problems ever; well except when they think they all have to play king of the mountain on the feeder and poo in their food.

I have had no issues wiht chicks eating pine shavings, but recently have changed to pellets. For me the pellets do a much better job of keeping odors at bay. I really prefer the pellets now.

They also absorb spilled water like crazy. Pretty good stuff

I am using Pine Shavings..

I see one occassionally grab one and run around with it thinking he/she has something....

Then I sprinkle the Medicated feed on the floor also.. This helps them walk and eat at same time..

Here's a PIC .. you can see what my setup is..

These are BR turkeys and RJF chickens..

I have raised all of my chicks in this wire brooder. There are catch trays under the brooder with shavings in it to catch the poop. Also there is a tray in the brooder with pine shavings in it for the chicks to scratch, peck in and sleep in. The water and feed stays clean. I have never had any problems with their feet going through the wire and they grow so fast.

I use pine shavings and love it. They seem to stay clean some how, or atleast thats how it looks(lol). They do peck at but it is clear to them what is and isnt food.

Cmom, I liked your dog kennel brooder ideas.

Especially on using shavings in the removable tray on the bottom. I was planning on using paper towels. Also, I like your idea of using a small tray of shavings inside the kennel for the chicks to use for playing/pecking and sleeping in.
