I was thinking about mounting nesting boxes for outside access. Do you think this modification will screw anything up?

The Woods concept requires that the back portion of the coop forms an "air cushion". Introducing anything that allows air to escape will prevent that will impact performance. I would be particularly concerned that a draft would develop across the roost area.

It seems like as long as the nexting box access sealed reasonably well when closed, the overall impact would be pretty marginal.

I use a lip or flange around mine (water is the concern for me), and when closed up, even in high winds, not much escapes.

A Woods coop is a walk in coop, no need to have an outside nest box IMHO. Coop Uno is so small I put the nest box in the run and after a year gave up on trying to make the lid seal out water and extended the roof of the run 2'. Coop Deux is a walk in coop and a cardboard box works fine for nest boxes.


In fact they rejected my fancy roll out nest box but love the cardboard boxes.

Eggs may be more likely to freeze in external nest boxes in cold climates, though if it's cold enough it likely won't make a difference if the nests are inside or out. Not sure if anyone with a Woods coop has tested to see if this makes a difference?

I didn't think about the eggs freezing being out off the side! That's a very point!
