Woods-style house in the winter

For the most part I built it to the original plan. I added a couple of inches of height to the front and rear wall, just for a little more headroom. Also, The plan calls for a footprint of 10'X16'. I built mine 8'X16'. I went with that, because it was easier with 4'X8' sheets of plywood. I framed up the wall sections on my garage floor. In the book Woods shows the wall sections built using the board and batten method. I thought about doing that, But went with standard framing with 4'X8' sheathing, It was just easier and faster for me. Other than that, The roof rafters, windows, were built as called for in the book. After you get the metric conversion figured out, You'll fly right through this, Right? Good luck, any other questions, I'll answer them best I can.

Maybe this is dumb, but I'm wondering about how to situate my future coop:

Why do the coops almost always sit up on cinderblocks? Do predators go under there all night bothering the chickens? Do big windy storms threaten to blow the coop off the cinderblocks?

Hello to all , I am so excited about this Wood-style coop . Just got the Fresh-Air Poulty House book . I asked my husband if he would build it for me and he said " If you have the money honey I have the time " What do you suppose he mean't by that ? He loves to build things so here hoping !

Well, I think my dream has just come true. I was waffling about which coop to have, woods style or chicken tractor? It turns out I can have both!

. Hubby reminded me that he has a brimar trailer that he has for sale at the local trailor place. He used it for work but the lights don't work. Enough other stuff wrong with it so he bought a newer one. It measures roughly 8x16 with a screen style fold down ramp. We were thinking of building the open front/window end facing the hitch so we could back it into place easily.

The problem is: do we still have enough space to put a door on the other end where the roosts are if we make the coop deeper? There is a railing around the trailer. We still plan to have a window where the door is on the original plans, and we plan to make it a tightly sealed door for winter. I ordered 15 birds. I am expecting i wont have 15 with a few losses though. Hm. We'll figure it out and post pics!

I think he is letting you know that he's a fan of Hank Williams. And that you are footing the bill!

That is an interesting design. I have a coop design in my head but lack the funds to get started. I guess I have time to redesign that plan. Craigslist here in East Texas costs more than Lowes or Home Depot!!!!!!

Yes, some snow will come in the very front of it, but not all that far in (except on days with whipping swirling winds and *blowing* rather than falling snow yo may get a dusting pretty well back in the house). And the thing is, it DOESN'T MATTER. Because it is not enclosed, there is no particular *reason* not to have snow on the frontmost part of the floor sometimes, it will not cause humidity problems.

That's good to know....if I ever get to build a new coop from scratch. I like to plan it in my dreams.

Still too wet to paint it but I will make a page for the entire project once it is done.
