Wool carpets are fancy right? I guess we'll see what the chickens think of it.
I usually sprinkle diatomaceous earth and then top with a layer of pine shavings, but I ran out of shavings and I'm not going to make a special trip just to get some but I do have a bag (well more like 8-10 bags) of raw 3/4 hair sheep wool.
So this happened:
(Picture angle it through the back of the coop, the plywood wall is on hinges so it opens for easy cleaning or can be latched shut)
One side of the wool is pretty matted together from the sheep rubbing on the wire fencing to scratch their itches so it isn't loose and fluffy as much as random sized chunks of carpet.
It's a very small coop, there are only 3 chickens and they only use it to sleep in and lay eggs, since they are free range all day. The current version of nesting box is the cardboard box on the far left edge of the picture. I have several upgrades planned for this sad excuse for a coop but it was our first attempt and until I build the future big coop with all the bells and whistles this will do the trick, plus whatever upgrades it gets along the way.
My sheep are 3/4 hair sheep and have just enough wool to need to be sheared rather than shedding like they are supposed to but it's full of guard hairs so it's completely worthless for anything people normally use wool for. My only other plans so far is to clean some and mix it with some cedar shavings to stuff a couple dog beds, and maybe make some felt for the flower beds to keep the weeds down...but first I'd need to actually get my flower beds under control.
