wooo hoooo (pictures)

Kingsdaughter,
We got a batch of chicks years and years ago, (in a past life, even!) and one of them was blind. One eye had not formed at all and the other looked as if it had a cataract over it. We named her Helen, after Helen Keller, of course, and she was the very best pet chicken you could imagine. The other chickens never picked on her. I think she could see a tiny bit, shadows maybe, but she always knew when we were near and came running to be with us. I think we must have had her for a good 3 years before she just disappeared one day. I'm sure something must have gotten her, but it still amazes me that she was around as long as she was and became such a great pet. Perhaps your little blind chick will surprise and delight you the way our little Helen did us. Good luck and congratulations on your babies! Mine came last Monday and I can't remember when I've had such fun!

Well the little thing is still holding on. She is more in the middle and I do see her drinking although I havent seen her eat . Doesnt mean she hasent, I just havent seen her.

I love the Helen Keller thing, but my moms name is Helen and it might not go over so well. I do feel for her, since she isnt running and playing. She doesnt want to lay down to sleep, so she leans on the trough, or another bird. I havent noticed anyone picking on her more than usual, I hope it stays that way. We'll she if she makes it through the night.

As for that contest...I think I will enter it. I laugh each time I see it too. Thanks for the info.

The chicks are buff orpington, delaware, partridge rock, silver laced wyandotte, one americana, and black australorp, and barred rock. I might have forgot something its late and has been a long day.

Well, the little blind one died. :| My 11yob who spent yesterday on an emotional rollercoaster, was ok with it. He was just thankfull we didnt do the killing. Since it didnt appear to suffer, Im ok with it too. The whole Helen Keller thing gave me some hope, but such is life, especially the lives of chickens.

I'm sorry to hear about your wee blind chick. I was routing for him. Hope the happiness of the other chicks helps ease your sadness.

I, too, am sorry that your little blind chick didn't make it. I was really rooting for her. You tried, that's all you can do. Sometimes it just isn't meant to be. We lost 2 from our batch - one within the first hour and the other by the end of the 2nd day and it's hard to watch them give up. On the other hand, the rest are full of life and growing right before my eyes. That helps make up for the loss.

How cute!!!

One of mine was blind in one eye and was growing slower than most of the others. He would also throw a fit if I meassed up his routine. He has caught up now and is managing fine but it was just one eye.
