It was mainly bah luck along with the NYT using improper grammar.

Plus the English language can be so confusing at times. I tried brier, even though I would normally spell it briar, apparently both are acceptable, as are cryer/crier, fryer/ frier, dryer-/drier, flyer/flier, but not spyer/spier or plyer/plier.
