Worked on a farm previously, now I am trying to raise chickens on my own.

Nice to meet you!
LUCKY Lux!!:wee
Oh those leghorns!! Agile trim, strong little athletes.
My favorite!! In fact as I was posting she flew up in my lap and I had to stop. Spoiled.
You might want to trim those flight feathers. That hawk will be back. I have NO love for hawks. Best wishes
I grew up with my neighbors leghorns in Germany, and they ARE beautiful. My two leghorn chickens tend to be skiddish. Lazarus Leaf, I have a video of him in my arms swaying back and forth (with my help) to my little made up song. We crow together at 4:30 am every morning. I really love the dude! It was a good thing he made the ruckus, that tells me he will protect them if he could! Thank you.

I

Will it help if I add about 1" strip of chicken wire to the top of the fence at a slight angle? All the other chickens stay in their fenced area. I have even trimmed their wing feathers to discourage flying. Lux is determined to get to the other side. I read on the forum that Hawks will come back, is that true? I had a covered area while they were smaller, but it became a problem in my yard, so I took it down again. My neighbors are supposed to come and move my coop for me, so I can work on making it completely hawk proof. Thank you so much for all the advice.

The top need's to be completely covered too help to keep them safe from flying predators.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all the information you need to know about poultry! There is always space for more members on the BYC roost!:highfive: I am happy to hear that your chicken survived a hawk attack. Someone I bought chickens from had a hawk get 20 of her 8 week old chicks. She even enclosed the run with wire at the top and they are still trying to get in but fortunately it worked! I believe livestock guardian dogs should keep them away but not everyone wants one. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

I have 4 dogs and three of them are under 17 lbs. And my medium dog is 38 lbs. They were inside with me for their treat, and they are usually in the same fenced area as the chickens. Lux for some reason loves to be OUTSIDE the fenced yard, and then she tries to get back in. I have to open the gate so she can get back in the yard. The rest of the chickens don't bother going out of the fence yard. She did loose quite a bit feathers in this attack, and as soon as I got her back in the yard, she ran and hid in the coop. Usually they are protected by the medium dog. Here is a picture of 17lbs. Moose (the fuzzy white dog) and Charley the chicken guards. In the back ground on the right are my 3-1/2 week old chicks.

Hi and welcome to BYC. You have some good advice already. You can also use the BYC search function for additional ideas for discouraging hawks.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 (there's a guide on how to include your location under your avatar - including your location is very helpful).
Best wishes
