World's Most Expensive Drumstick

Ummm .... wow.

Well ... I hate to say it, but if any of my chickens gets caught up in something, I'll be very sad (and regret it deeply if it was something I could have prevented) and I'll do everything I can to save it but ...

We have to pay utility bills and buy groceries around here.

If I had more money than I knew what to do with, I would of course want to save a pet I loved, but I think I'd be with Devora ... I'd have to give a whole lot more into something like feeding starving children before I could justify to my conscience for spending thousands on a pet chicken.

It is a sweet story though. And I've had friends who spent amazing amounts of money on sick pets -- many times over what the pet was "worth" in terms of dollar value.

That surely must be the world's most expensive drumstick though!

The thing that struck me was that the vet then diagnosed the chicken as having depression. i think that is anthropomorphizing the whole thing a bit too far. i know animals have feelings, just not as many and as complex as humans. i hope the vet did not prescribe prozac for the chicken, as that would mean the owners would be eating antidepressant-laced eggs.

The vet must have done a good job treating the depression. The owners say that it's great to see that smile back on her beak...

come on !! really who would pay that much???

I paid $1500 for one of my dogs but then decided if that didnt work he would have to be PTS i would never spend that much on a chicken im afraid.

I can't say that I would spend that much on a chicken even though I love them dearly. We spent around $300 on our cat Rowdy when he got out of the house and got hit by a car. I've spent $1450.00 on one of our Newfoundlands, but we breed these dogs. That was more of an investment and it was tax time when I paid for him. I lost my best friend Lady (who was a 15 year old Lab) last year after years of dealing with IBS. But you know the x-ray and vet bill was only around $78 and her medication a month only cost like $5. To me that is reasonable. I can't see spending $4000.00 on a $2 chicken no matter how much they mean to me. That amount of money could pay a lot of bills, put new siding on the house or buy me a much kinder gas saver vehicle. That could also be one heck of a chicken condo too. A sacrifice of one for many I guess is my philosophy.

It is nice to know though that there are people out there that value life in all forms.

The value of a pet dosn't depend on the initial cost.
This chicken is the same to this lady as a cat or dog would be to someone else.
Would I spend that much on a chicken? I don't know. There are some I am more fond of then others and the quality of life has to be considered.
Its was worth it to these people.
Also, how many of us give up buying unnessary items and send the money to starving children???

I suppose it's a matter of perspective. We have no children, so we don't mind spending the money on our animals. We've spent thousands on our dogs and cats over the past 10 years. Still a lot cheaper than raising a kid and putting him or her through college.

i hope my comment didn't sound callous. i have spent thousands on medical care, grooming, food, etc, for my cats. Now that i have chickens i'm out buying organic greens and mealworms and all kinds of treats for them. If one of them needed medical care, and i had the resources, i would not hesitate to spend the money, if the treatment would allow them a good quality of life.

i have learned though, that you can spend thousands and your pet dies anyhow - that happened to me last year. Sometimes it's just their time to go and there is nothing you can do about it. But clearly that lucky chicken has plenty of life left in her AND she's happy about it!
