World's Oldest Chickens

Up until about 3 weeks ago, there was a lone chicken in our barn. She was old, for a chicken I'm sure, but we had no way of knowing how old exactly. She was the last surviving chicken from my brother's chicken raising time, several years ago and her name was "World's Oldest Hen" (not the most creative, I know!). Someone who had been mowing the fields thought she belonged with my cousin's new flock and tossed her in with the other birds, but I pulled her out b/c we were worried about the old girl getting beat up.

Hopefully her little chicken soul is at peace. She was so cute, would come running down the barn aisle when she heard you open the feed bin and her little toenails would click click click!

Aw, sorry for your loss Mango! I love her name.
We had our annual Blessing of the Animals at our vicar's house this afternoon. I brought a picture of Rocky.

I agree that the breed and individual both play into it, as well as things that just mystify me...for instance, our current older gals are 4-5 yrs old, with our BO 6-7 yrs old - and most are still laying.

Those 7 venerable hens produce 2-4 eggs a day, somewhat less now with shorter days.
