World's Rarest Dog Breed Found In Illegal Pennsylvania Kennel

I wonder who was involved in making that decision? I'd be willing to bet there's someone somewhere capable of making careful breeding decisions with a few of these dogs.

When conserving a breed, even if there are very few, it is important to select only those you know have a good, healthy, breeding history. These dogs that are inbred so severely are not the ideal specimines of the species. If they had been only one or perhaps even two genertions of inbreeding and had had a more varied parent base, perhaps these animals would be considered for breeding, but this is a fairly severe case of inbreeding. From 4 you get 68 and who knows how many brothers and sisters were bred together.

Had the dogs been bred responsibly they would perhaps have been considered as breeding animals, but the situation is quite different and since nothing known about the breeding history it would not be a very good idea to risk breeding them. The results may be good, but then also they may not and a precious litter of the very few there are would have been wasted.

150 individuals is a small number, but these individuals are part of the conservation and have been selectively bred to keep the genetics varied and strong as possible. The efforts of the conservation is eventually to have a sustaining wild population again, or so it is with most conservations.

Likely the New Guinea Singing Dog Conservation Society was behind the decision to spay an nueter.

At least the dogs weren't put down and were aloud to live their lives.

Ok so this will sound nuts.. but we have a dog that looks just like that and she doesn't bark it is more like the "singing" this dog does. I wonder if she is a cross breed?

We have had he a good 10 years and never knew what she was. We got her from some kind fo rescue group because at the time she was a puppy and her, her mom and the other puppies were being abused.. Interesting.. but she looks just like this dog..
