Worming chickens.

Hi I know this is from a while back but can you tell me what to use for gape worm some one on backyard chickens said you were and expert I have almost 100 chickens that free range over 5 acre. What is the best thing to use and where do you get it is there something you can put in the water to treat? And what can I do do to get rid of the snails the nasty little culprits that gave it to them. Thanks for any info you can give me!

SafeGuard liquid goat wormer will treat gapeworm with a high dosage of 1/4 ml per pound of weight (1.25 ml for a 5 lb chicken) given orally for 3-4 straight days. Levimisole can also be used, but is a bit hard to find.

X2. I'd go with Safeguard liquid since you often have to withhold feed for a day and dose on an empty crop with levamisole wormers. To me that is too stressful for the birds.

Just responding via following. I'd asked for help for a gasping chicken with no other symptoms and didn't hear a thing from any one. I lost one bird three days ago and another one has started with the gasping. I'll get the wormer tomorrow.

hello ive had real good luck with swine wormer/with fenbendazole it kills the gape worm egg's and the worm's. with no hold back.it's a powder form mix it in there grain's using oil so the powder stick's to the grains.feed for 6 days and there good to go but if the birds are in the pen you should tiger tourch the pen good to burn up any egg's that are laying around.

Here is your thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/899523/chicken-gasping-for-air-weak-in-the-legs#post_13707571
It took a few days, but you eventually had a few posts. You might want to check back or keep posting for help on the same thread to get help. If questions are posted during certain times of the day, many don't see them. But if you post again, the thread gets brought back to the top again, so in he future if you don't get a response, just post again..

The SafeGuard liquid goat wormer (and is also in equine paste) is a brand of fenbendazole. Panacur is another brand.

Probably where ever you read this Gapes were misdiagnosed, as it is 99% of the time, Chicken yawns or coughs for whatever reason and automaticaly has gapes, Chicken is givin whatever and cured, Levamisole.Albendazole.Fenbendazole and Ivermectin will control gapes if caught in time. Levamisole is in the bloodstream quicker than the others, With either of these four it has to be in the bloodstream long and high enough to be effective..See post above

Hi Covey Rise Plantation,
I read on the forum here that you are the 'expert' on gapeworm :)
I found a little baby chicken on the road 3 weeks ago and he's been unwell now for 2 weeks.
I live in Bali and the vet here normally only treats dogs and chickens. (so a bit hard to find the right meds).
Around 3 days ago I gave him Pyrantel, which got rid of 10 roundworms! yuck
But I discovered that Pyrantel does not kill gapeworm.
Now I went back to the vet and she gave me ivermectin. Do you think this can treat the gapeworm? And should I wait 7 days in between the pyrantel and the new wormer?
I am not sure if it is gapeworm, but it is prevalent in Asia and he does the neck stretching and gaping (not all the time though, but definitely quite a few times every day). He looks pale. And is scratching and shaking his head a lot. Also sneezing and diarrhoea and tucking his head in. Other times he is active and alive and eats well. Then again, quite miserable and tumbling over. :(

Thank you Covey Rise Plantation, or any other person, for replying to this one.
