Worming peacocks

Blackhead... sigh... I read somewhere that once a bird has been exposed and recovered three times that they aren't likely to get it a fourth time.

September thru January seems to be when my birds from that season get sick. Haven't figured out if it's age related or seasonal. Knock wood, all here are looking okay so far.

Glad to hear you are not seeing it in yours this year. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. No way to clear it from your property? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I just don't know much about it.

Quote: No way to get rid of it, it's likely that it will be here forever. Not sure where came from... This property hadn't ever had any poultry on it before we bought it and I didn't add any new chickens when we moved here. Still lots I don't quite understand about it.

Got lots of metronidazole (200mg tabs, 250mg tabs, 100mg tabs and the liquid), a liter of Safeguard and 100ml of Baytril, so I'm ready to treat it when it rears it's ugly head!

Wow, I had no idea you had that many birds, oral dosing definitely isn't feasible at those numbers. I truly hope you can get the upper hand with this. How long have you been on that property? Do you know if there were birds there prior to yours?

Dad bought this place in 1950, I bought it three years ago and we have had birds here since last year. Dad never had any fowl and who knows what was here before 1950. We already have the upper hand, the sample we took in last week had a severe number of Cocci eggs, so many she could not see if there were any other type of eggs in the stool, and that was after two rounds of Corid in the water one week apart at the .024% dosage. The vet was pleased with the results so far and it was her opinion that there will always be a few eggs of most worms in a birds system. It is finding the economic threshold, the point of load that the bird can live with, that is important, after a certain point medicating becomes necessary.

I would be really interested in the results if you were to do a fecal exam. Not trying to spend your money for you but if it only costs the same $15 it does here and if you are curious enough....

Take a baggie and a stick and collect some poo from about five different piles, smush it around to mix it up good. The test takes about 15 minutes, we normally just walk in but you may have to call ahead to your vet. The fresher is better but the samples can be a few hours old and still be ok.
