Worming peacocks

My avian vet is a 90 minute drive, so that's not gonna happen, lol, but maybe I can talk my cat vet into doing it, though it will be more than $15, lol. I'll make some calls.

The only vet we have that will see the birds is also 90 minutes away. I tried to talk my dog & cat vet into fecals, but they just will not do it.

The avian vet will let me mail poop to them though, but it costs $60.00 to do a fecal, I know because I had 3 done last year. My results came back with a lot of cocci and a very small amount of capillary worms, nothing else. That's why the babies are on medicated feed and getting the preventative dose of corid in the water as well. So far so good, knock on wood!

What I really need to do is get the lab set up and do my own fecals. Got all the supplies and books, lol.

I have been thinking about doing that too. I think I will check out Craigs list for a used scope and a centrifuge. After watching them do it it does not look all that difficult. They put the poo in a test tube, fill it with a liquid, (I forgot what it was), spin it for about five minutes, take it out and refill it to the brim, put a slide glass on it and wait for three more minutes, put the slide glass on a slide and take a look at it. Compare what you find to the pics in the book and there you go. Easy-Peasy.

If I had to pay $60 for each one I would have paid for the equipment already.

Mindy, our vet works with the county fair doing the fowl work, she isn't really a fowl vet but she enjoys doing something different than cows, pigs, and horses. You might try finding a small town vet nearby instead of looking for a bird vet. Fecals do not take much specialization, you could do it with a little help to get started.

These people are in Gilroy and they work with birds - maybe they could at least do a fecal for you?

Or maybe these guys - they must be closer than a 90 minute drive:

Thanks! I've actually taken my dog to Princevalle, so maybe they will (they were on my list of vets to call). The vet in San Jose is closer than 90 minutes if you go there between 10am and 2pm, lol (non-commute hours). The one I won't ever go to again is in Cupertino.

I can get you a list of the stuff we bought if you want...

-Kathy
Can you send me that list also. Just hope DH doesn't find out, he has a Poo Phobia

. If he found out I was purposely collecting the stuff he'd leave me. I have tried every small town vet in the area, and we are rural, so there are quite a few. Same story every time.....Won't do a fecal without an exam. What a Peacock? Sorry we don't do birds, therefore...no fecal. I honestly think they are all afraid if they find something I will want meds from them and they have a liability issue if they prescribe for a species they "don't treat". I have of course told them that I have all the meds already just would be nice to know which are actually needed and which are not!

Quote: Fecal float supply list by this weekend!
Poo phobia? Lol, I guess birds to be necropsied aren't kept in the fridge?

I suspect that's the bull they're going to tell me, but I'm not even gonna ask them how to treat for whatever they might find, that I can figure out on my own, lol, and you all know I don't need any medications from them!

This may not be too difficult, I found a vet clinic selling off their equipment on Craigs List, listed prices and 'make offer'. They had both the scope and centrifuge. Also found a bunch of antique scopes for around $75 in the city.
