worming quail

I think getting fecals done is a great idea, but I read somewhere that the fecal float test for the capillary worm is not easy to do. Do any of you know much about fecals and the different methods? One thing I read said that it required several hours "in the liquid", another said it required a centrifuge?

Kathy, I have always known you were a "mad scientist". LOL I have never done fecal testing myself. I have always found it easier to get it tested, although I have never had any real serious worm problems here. Round worms are the only worms I have ever had to deal with. And even then, at this altitude, VERY intense UV, and some of the driest dirt on Earth, LOL, worms and their eggs don't survive long. I have never had infestations.

So I can't help you with this one. BUT....if you do figure any of this stuff out, PLEASE enlighten me! I am always on the road to learning new things and I too love to experiment with things. A closet scientist if you will. LOL And the more I know, the better steward I am to my flock. So keep me posted if you know something about this!

Lol, I am not doing fecals yet, but I do have a scope and float materials and am planning on learning! I was asking because as much as I want to trust my vet, when I've read something that implies capillaries are hard to test for and she comes back in a few minutes and say "no worms", I wonder how accurate her test is.

This is true. And if your vet does not understand how to test for capillary worms, it could very well be that the birds to have them, and you would never know.

Ok then Kathy....you need to get all the supplies on hand, do all the necessary research into how it is done, and test your birds poop.

Then, come back here and tell me!

What type of scope do you have? Are you able to see round worms in the poop? If you can, I REALLY need one of those. I would love to be able to test my birds myself. Maybe it isn't too late for Santa to come down my stove pipe with a Scope for me!!! LOL

I have never actually seen a worm in my birds poop. But from having the poop tested occasionally, they have had them over all these years. Small amounts. I would love to be able to test for them myself. Is this one in this link powerful enough to view worms? I would imagine if you have actually seen worms in the poop, they are not always micro sized. Can you see eggs as well in this scope do you think?

My roommate is the smart one, lol, and he's the one that bought the scope with the intention of being able to do our own fecals and gram stains, so I sure hope it can see more than just worms, lol.

Quote: Keep me posted Kathy. Really. I am interested in doing this. It would definitely satisfy the mad scientist in me as well!
