worming

I had the state test our flock and the report came back that the girls have capillaria (as well as other bacterial and mycoplama infections, which we have since treated). The state had no recommendations for treating the birds, so I pulled my poultry health books where I saw that levamisole was recommended to treat capillaria. I ordered some from vetshoponline.com, not realizing that they were an Australian firm.

I also found out that levamisole has been used by cocaine manufacturers as a cutting agent when they make crack cocaine. My question to the forum is:

Has anyone purchased levamisole from off-shore sources and actually received the medication? I ordered on August 23, and think that it's reasonable that I've not received it yet, but wonder if the shipment will be confiscated as contraband by the customs officials.

Another question:

Does anyone know of a domestic source for levamisole? If vetshoponline.com takes much longer, I may be forced to try another source.

Thanks in advance for any help with this. We've lost four birds this year and want to treat the flock to avoid further loss.

Just found some worms in my banty's poop, gross. I was going to take it to the avian vet but they are closed on Tuesday's. Should I wait and take the sample tomorrow or try and treat her, I have a total of 11 chcikens and guess I have to treat them all?? I saw 2 small worms (so gross!) I don't know if there were more, I put the poop in a plastic baggie and am not sure what to do. I Have tried reading some of the threads and this was very recent one and am hoping for some help/suggesstions? They were about 1/2 cm or just a little longer. Any thoughts, treat now or wait to get stool sample tested and if I treat what should I use and do I treat them all, plus are the eggs safe to eat??? THANKS

You wouldve been better off ordering valbazen cattle/sheep wormer or safeguard liquid goat wormer. Both these products will kill capillary worms and many other types of worms. Either can be ordered from Jefferslivestock.com or call them.

Sounds like possible cecal worms. See post #25. Treat all your birds. Eggs are ok to eat unless you find a worm inside the egg (extra meat.)

There's a 14 day withdrawal period after last dosing of either wormer in post #25.

Okay, Valbazen is albendazole, which is effective on a broad spectrum of round worms. Do you have any information on the dosage for chickens?

Use a syringe without a needle and administer orally undiluted. Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size birds and 1/4cc for smaller birds. Redose again in 10 days. There's a 14 day withdrawal period after last dosing.
