Worms and lice

Short of going to a vet is there a way to tell if my hens have worms or lice and how would I treat for those?

You can see lice if check their skin under the feathers, usually.
You can see worm segments in poop if they have very heavy loads.
Treat lice with livestock permethrin powder or spray, clean out the coop completey, treat with the product and add new bedding and litter.
