Worms (first time)...help

Was just out collecting eggs in my BBS rock pen and "scooping the poop". Happened to notice some very fine, about 4" long, roundish worms in one pile of fecal matter. Pretty sure it's worms of some sort. They are white, thin (almost like extra thin spaghetti noodles)

So, the question is how best do I treat them. I have Wazine (although I've never used it) so I have no idea how much to use or if there are any safer/more effective alternatives.

Sounds like roundworms to me, Scott, but I've never used Wazine/Piperazine myself, but here is your info. Do you have the 17 or the 34? From a veterinary site and a game bird site as well:

CHICKENS - 4 to 6 weeks of age: for each 100 birds, use 1 fluid ounce (30 ml) of Wazine-17 in 1 U.S. gallon (3.8 liters) of drinking water.

Over 6 weeks of age: for each 100 birds, use 2 fluid ounces (60 ml) of Wazine-17 in 2 U.S. gallons (7.6 liters) of drinking water.

I've heard a capful of Wazine to a gallon of water, too, but that would be an ounce or close to it. Some wormers are okay to use larger than required dosages, like Safeguard, but not sure about Wazine.​

Should I try using something different? I bought this once some time ago, but never needed to use it. I hate to think one of my girls is sick and want to get her healthy quickly.

I don't mind going to get something different.

Also, I remember hearing not to eat the eggs while you are treating them....how long to wait??

Well, there isn't really a withdrawal with Wazine, though most do wait a week or two. Now, it only gets roundworms. You could use the Safeguard suspension liquid goat wormer (also called Panacur or Fenbendazole), but I'd have to look up the dosage. It gets most types of worms but has a 2-3 week withdrawal, I think. Eprinex Pour On cattle wormer is really easy and since there is no milk or meat withdrawal for cattle, I like to use that one. You just put it on the skin on the back of the neck, 1/2 cc per standard bird.

Eprinex right? And just get some syringes to use to apply it?

I'm guessing I would be wise to treat everyone (all coops) right? I see no visible signs in Peppers pen nor in the Col Rock pen, was just thinking if one had it that others might as well??!!

Sounds like Roundworms, very common. If you are seeing the worms in the poop it mean that the birds are heavily infested

Speckledhen, you said there is no withdrawl with Wazine 17, where did you hear that from? The bottle says to wait 2 week after worming with it before slaughting chickens and it says not to use in egg laying hens. I've heard you can use it in egg laying hens if you wait 2 weeks before eating the eggs.

You can use 2 table spoons Wazine to one gallon water. From what I have read Wazine will only kill the adult worms, so you may need to reworm in a few weeks, to make sure you get them all.

I have piperazine. Haven't used it yet but the instructions are, 2 tbsp per gallon of water.
Use after the age of 6 weeks. It is to be the only source of water for one day.
Do not eat the eggs for 5 days after treatment.

I use FOOD GRADE (important!) DE (Diatomaceous Earth) in their feed. DE is a natural insecticide and effectively eliminates both worms and parasites. Every time I refill the feeder I generously sprinkle DE all over the food. I also cover the areas they love to dust bathe in with it, regularly sprinkle it all over the coop, and dust the birds with it. Every time I put new pine shavings down, a hefty layer of DE goes with it. You can even stir it into their water. I buy mine on-line, but shipping costs are rediculous. Local feed or garden stores in your area may carry it, saving you shipping costs. A 50 lb. bag lasts me about 8 months. Here's a great site for more info:

How about deworming and waiting to collect eggs for incubation?

I saw a post once where someone had hatch eggs after deworming and had to put down the chicks.


Don't recall how long the person waited after deworming to start collecting.

any ideas ... from the smartest chicken folks on the planet? !!

You know, one site said no withdrawal, but this one does say 14 days before slaughter for Wazine. It also says not to use with egg laying chickens, period. All our chicken wormers are really off-label so the withdrawals are guesses at best.
