Worms?

Tape worms do not shed in every poo. Treat them all and any dogs you have as well, if any. Praziquantel is exactly what is recommended for mammals with tapeworm, so that would be what's needed if you have other pets also.

@Sharwig[/USER] ) what the egg withholding time was for the use of Praziquantel?

Vet recommended 30 days. It is an off label dewormer but is supposed to be one and done treatment. We actually havn't given it to them yet. We're trying to finish a run to keep them out of the environment before we treat them. They've been free-ranging. We spent all summer dumping eggs trying the Panacur and Valbazen. $45 for the Valbazen and it didn't work :(. Anywho, just hoping my experience helps others!

Can my cat get these worms?

No. From everything I've read, chicken tapeworms are specific to chickens (aka host specific). We have a dog that runs around the chicken yard all the time and he's never picked up worms (just recently had his check up)

Tapeworms require an "intermediate host" meaning they don't get the worms directly from the ground; they have to eat a bug or insect that has eaten the tapeworm eggs to get them.

This information comes from Gail Damerow's "Chicken Health Handbook". It has become my poultry bible...:)

Good luck!

Hey @Sharwig , that's great the Praziquantel worked for the tapeworms! Perhaps it would be best for @kyleen to call her vet for a prescription and have a fecal float while she's at it. Did the vet tell you (@Sharwig ) what the egg withholding time was for the use of Praziquantel? @KikisGirls , do you know?

@coach723 as always - a good post! You explained withholdings very well :clap
I got some zimecterin gold from tractor supply. I put a pea size amount in 3cc of water syringe and put it in their mouth. Will see how it goes! Thanks for your help always!!

Phew! That makes sense. Indoor kitties.

i also give my girls cayenne pepper.. just a little in some treats every few days.. worms can't tolerate the pepper, and chickens can't taste the heat.. it's more a preventive measure, or a maintenance one..

I wish I didn't know as much as I know! Haha! Let us know how the Zimectrin works. I have a tube as well, but since we've been fighting them all summer, decided to use the straight praziquantal that our vet perscribes, especially since its supposed to be one and done.

O.K. So your using Ivermectin/Praziquantel ---Zirmecterin Gold dosage is .06ml per lb.
Kathy (@casportpony ) has a good a good "visual" on "pea size" in post#13 (See post #11 for break down of dosing as well).

If this is what you are using - I would agree with @Sharwig Egg throw away period would be 30days from last dosage. So you will give 1dose, then another in 10days - so your total withdrawal time would be around 40days - but as @coach723 mentioned, you will need to do some research and determine what you are comfortable with.
