Worried about BYC! Anyone feel the same?

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with playing games on BYC. After all, why else would they have put a Games, Jokes and Fun forum there?
The majority of BYC members post on the chicken threads anyway, and as cluckcluckluke said, you can get your questions answered quickly on chat threads as well. People that are mostly on the Game forum still use their chicken knowledge to help out.

Y'know, considering that the OP has managed over 19,000 posts in about 8 months, this whole thread seems preposterous to me. There have been days when he was the most active poster on the entire forum (nobody manages that with just "chicken talk,") and he's worried about all the games and social threads? How do you spell "troll?!"

The OP has always done a lot on the games, jokes, and fun section--I think part of the reason he started it was to reflect his own activity patterns.

I too think that some off the chat threads are great, I have asked Q's about chickens on them many times and get instant answer's, especially on the big ones.
They can be a great source of help, even if the information does get a bit lost and I always find that the conversation always makes it way back onto the subject of chickens.
Yeah but there are like 40 chat threads now! lol

So are you saying that all we should talk about on this site is chickens? I mean there is only so much chicken stuff we can talk about...... I mean, it's nice to talk about other thins besides chickens. What we all have in common here is that we all love chickens. BYC will always be a chicken site. Even if chickens aren't always our main focus.
I am not saying that at all. All I am saying is their are so many chat threads and games that I can't learn about chickens! I don't know about you but I get distracted with so much "fun" stuff if you get my meaning. I am not saying these chat threads are bad but they are a little bit excessive!

If I was going to make a guess, I would think that many
of our younger members check into the game room. But
regardless of age, that's what the members posting in the
game and joke threads are into.

I seldom check there. But that isn't what I'm into. I don't even
understand the ones I have looked at.

I do look at the gardening, the DIY, or any of the areas that
interest me.

And I appreciate those areas. There is a lot of knowledge about
a lot of things on Backyard Chickens.

But I'll also bet that that many of our younger members seldom
check the gardening, DIY, or even the for sale section.

Because at this point in their life, that isn't what a lot of gamers
are into.

As Nifty said, those that actually put this board together and run
it have done an awesome job. For me, this is not one of the best
sites on the internet : it is the top site. We are as diverse a group
of people as we can be.

So much more that chickens happening here.

Take me for example. I'm the Spook, a three year member here.
I don't post a whole lot and when I do it is almost never about a
chicken. Such a wealth of chicken knowledge here, I know I'm
outgunned. So I read along. And learn.

But once and a while, I might post a little something in the Random
Ramblings are. Not much, but a little bit. And I hope along the way
that we've made a few people smile. Once in a while some of my
friends put some pretty funny stuff on there.

I know that some people read it, some don't.

And that's the point.

We aren't all into the same thing.

But we are members of the same forum.

I think there would be more than that. There must be almost a chat thread for half the members here.lol.

Actually, that emoticon should say "great post". I like the Games, Jokes, and Fun part of the forum, but I also try to help with sex, breeds and things like bumblefoot when I can! There's nothing wrong with a few fun & games, because if this website was chickens and chickens only , it would get a little boring from my point of view. Not criticizing chickens, they're great, but it's fun to have a little relief where you can hang out with REAL friends, even if they're over the internet.

Quote: I know there are an excess of chat threads, but several will die and those remaining will become the main chat threads again. It's the chat forum circle of life. :)
And the reason the fun stuff seems so outstanding is because you participate in it. For my first two weeks on the forum, I was very active--and NONE of it was games, jokes, and fun. I hardly knew of that forum category's existence, and ignored posts from it on the recent activity page. The only reason you see so much of it is because you're on there a lot. It is just as active as "chicken behaviors and egg laying", but the threads on games, jokes, and fun last longer, making it easier to be on that forum a lot. If you were to drop, say, half your activity there, it would seem a lot less big.

19,000 posts! That should be a ton of learning and asking about chickens.

Personally, I am not in to games so I skip the games section, it pretty easy.

I do check the posts in the topics I am interested in and enjoy reading spooks posts!

But once your coop is built, your chicks are raised and sorted, you realize that you have come to enjoy the thoughts and online friendships that you have made with others. Why not discuss other aspects of life than chickens. Just like in school, if you have friends you met in math class, you would likely talk to them about things beyond math assignments and problems.

I highly doubt that any new people join BYC just for the games and jokes. Maybe I am wrong here, but I would think most folks originally joined on because they raise chickens or other poultry. And as stated in a previous post, after we have all built our coops, raised our chicks and are all settled in with things, we then wander back to our other interests in life. If these other areas of the forums were not available to us and did not come in a variety, like games, jokes, gardening, etc...then it is possible that many of these members might stray away permanently if they no longer needed BYC. I personally have never visited many of these threads let alone many of the other forum topics. But I do not mind that they exist. I will probably never keep "Geese" and may never crack open that part of the forums, but again, it is ok that it is there.

So what is the big deal about these other areas of the forums? Just like the entire world we live in, we all have different interests and ways to live our lives and we all should be allowed to express ourselves and be who we are to be one happy family. One BYC family.
